How to Apply for Marriage Certificate in Delhi

The marriage certificate is legal proof that couples can apply for under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. This document is useful while applying for many other government documents after marriage like PAN Card, Passport, or even Visa.

This guide will let you know How to apply for a marriage certificate in Delhi and take certain benefits after being lawfully registered. If both husband and wife are Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, or Sikhs or converted into any of these religions, they need to apply under the Hindu Marriage Act. Otherwise, they can apply under the special marriage Act.

Requirements to apply for marriage certificate in Delhi

The husband must be at least 21 years of age.
The wife must be 18 years or above.

Documents required to Apply for marriage Certificate in Delhi

It is important to have an aadhaar card to apply for marriage certificate in Delhi. If the Aadhaar card or application receipt is not available for any of the Bride or Groom, the marriage certificate application is not accepted.

An application form duly signed by both bride and groom.
Date of Birth Certificates of both parties (matriculation certificate/passport/) confirming that both husband and wife are eligible to marry.
Ration card of husband /wife.
Both the parties must produce an affidavit stating the place and date of marriage, date of birth, marital status at the time of marriage, and nationality.
Two passport-sized photographs of bride and groom, including a photograph of marriage.
Marriage invitation card (in case of an arranged marriage).
If marriage rites were performed at a religious place, a certificate from the priest is required who solemnized the marriage.
If any of the parties is divorced or widow/widower, then an attested copy of divorce decree/order or death certificate must be produced respectively.

Fee to apply for marriage Certificate in Delhi

Parties need to pay Rs. 100/- for registration under the Hindu Marriage Act and Rs.150/- under the Special Marriage Act.
The fee must be deposited to t the cashier of District and after that, the receipt should be attached with the application form.

Procedure after form submission

Once the application is submitted, a copy of the notice is pasted on the Notice board of the SDM Office.
If any person has an objection to the marriage, they can object to it within 30 days from the issuance of notice.
If there is any objection, SDM will not solemnize the marriage.
In case the SDM refuses to solemnize the marriage, the couple may file an appeal to the district court within 30 days.
If no objection is filed, the SDM will solemnize the marriage after a 30-day period.
The couple must be present along with 3 witnesses from each side in the SDM office on the date of marriage solemnization.
The witnesses then need to sign and produce their passport-sized photographs on the date of solemnization of marriage.
