Officials say that Seara Burton, an officer from eastern Indiana who was shot in the head during a traffic stop in August and was taken off life support more than two weeks ago, has died.
A message on Facebook from the Richmond Police Department says that Officer Seara Burton died late Sunday night at a Reid Health facility.
In a statement, several officials said, “We’d like to thank the people of Richmond, as well as those from near and far who have helped Seara, her family, and the department.”
Burton was hurt very badly in the August 10 accident. The 28-year-old cop was taken off life support on September 1 at a hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Two days later, he was moved to hospice care.

“When Seara was around, you couldn’t help but be HAPPY and respond to the JOY she shared with you. Seara was kind and willing to help. She cared a lot about her family and her little sisters. It seems like she was meant to work in a service field. Wetzel said that Seara always put the needs of others ahead of her own.
Officer Burton is still fighting for her life, and the people who know and care about her say that all they want is for her to get better.
Brown said, “There’s not much you can do, but sometimes just seeing your family together is enough to get you through.”
