Frankie Edgar’s Bio

Frankie Edgar, a former professional mixed martial artist from the United States, was born on October 16, 1981. The former UFC Lightweight Champion most recently participated in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight division. Edgar competed at featherweight and made three attempts to win the UFC Featherweight Championship after successfully winning and defending his lightweight championship several times. In addition, he participated in collegiate wrestling at Clarion University in Pennsylvania, where he qualified for the NCAA Division I National Championship four times. He is ranked #12 in the UFC bantamweight standings as of October 17, 2022.

Frankie Edgar’s Early Years

Frank and Mary (née Annese) Edgar welcomed Edgar into the world on October 16, 1981 in Toms River, New Jersey, where he was raised.

He competed in wrestling at Toms River High School East, making it to the state finals three times, finishing second as a junior and fifth as a senior. He is the oldest of three children, and before finishing high school, he competed in the NHSCA Senior Nationals, finishing in second place. Edgar competed in wrestling for four more years at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, where he qualified each year for the national championships. He works as an assistant coach for the wrestling team at Rutgers University. With an Italian mother, stepfather, and paternal grandparents, Edgar has a strong Italian heritage. However, he also has some German lineage on his biological father’s side.

Frankie Edgar’s Career in Mixed Martial Arts

Edgar only had a little amount of training outside of his wrestling experience when he entered his first mixed martial arts match. Edgar began his training with Rob Guarino of the Rhino Fight Squad, but now he is a part of the Gracie system in Hamilton, New Jersey, working with Ricardo Almeida, a member of the Gracie Barra team. Since the seventh grade, Edgar has engaged in competitive wrestling at Jackson, New Jersey’s Elite Wrestling NJ. Mark Henry of Millstone, New Jersey, is his boxing coach.

Fighting Championship Ultimate

Before making the cut for The Ultimate Fighter season five, Edgar amassed a 5-0 record. Edgar auditioned in front of matchmaker Joe Silva and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White, but was not chosen to appear on the program. But a month later, Edgar received a call from the UFC asking if he would agree to face fellow unbeaten fighter Tyson Griffin at UFC 67. At the end of the battle, Griffin trapped Edgar in a deep kneebar, but Edgar resisted the urge to submit and finished the round to win by unanimous decision. On UFC Unleashed, the bout has been aired numerous times.

At UFC 73, Edgar defeated Mark Bocek via first-round technical knockout. At UFC 78, he faced experienced fighter Spencer Fisher in his main-card debut and prevailed by unanimous decision.

Against Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 13, Edgar suffered his first defeat. The first fight of a series was this one. Maynard defeated Edgar by using his strength and wrestling prowess to win the match by a unanimous vote. At UFC Fight Night 14, Edgar bounced back with a victory against Hermes França in another Fight of the Night contest. Then, Edgar overcame former UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk, outworking him over the course of three rounds to defeat the bigger, stronger opponent.

Kurt Pellegrino was scheduled to fight Edgar in The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on December 5, 2009, but Pellegrino was forced to withdraw due to an injury.

Pellegrino’s replacement, Matt Veach, was announced and he was promoted from a bout on the undercard. After spending the majority of the first round on the defensive, Edgar took the initiative in the second round by hammering Veach with strikes. After knocking Veach to the ground with a straight right, Edgar then took Veach’s back and submitted him with a rear-naked choke at 2:22.

Lightweight Champion of the UFC

Edgar faced off against Lightweight Champion B.J. Penn at UFC 112. The judges’ scorecards were used to make a verdict following a protracted, back-and-forth, mostly standing fight. The results were in Edgar’s favor (50-45, 49-46, and 48-47). He was given the UFC Lightweight Championship by unanimous decision. 8 out of 9 media outlets gave Penn the victory in the fight.

Edgar was named a contender for Best Upset of the Year at the 2010 ESPY Awards by ESPN on June 24, 2010.

The fight at UFC 112 was deemed competitive enough that Edgar’s first championship defense was a rematch with Penn at UFC 118 on August 28, 2010.

After bringing Penn down many times and out-striking him throughout all five rounds, Edgar defeated Penn by majority decision to retain the UFC Lightweight Championship. This time, there was no controversy surrounding the verdict. Edgar is the second fighter to defeat Penn in the Lightweight division (the other being Jens Pulver) and the second opponent to ever defeat Penn twice, with all three judges awarding him a 50-45 victory in the contest (the other being Georges St-Pierre).

The only person to have defeated Edgar, Gray Maynard, was Edgar’s opponent for his subsequent title defense in a rematch from UFC Fight Night 13. With a victory over Kenny Florian at UFC 118, Maynard gained the top contender position. The fight took place at UFC 125 on January 1, 2011, and it ended in a split draw (48–46 Maynard, 48–46 Edgar and 47–47). Maynard repeatedly dropped Edgar throughout the opening round of the fight, but Edgar pulled through. His match with Maynard marked the third championship bout in UFC history to end in a draw.

The final WEC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis will be Edgar’s next opponent, it was revealed at the UFC 125 post-fight press conference. Dana White, the president of the UFC, however, revealed a change of heart less than two hours later. At UFC 130, Edgar was then slated to face Gray Maynard a third time. On May 9, 2011, Dana White announced that both Edgar and Maynard had suffered injuries and that their fight had been canceled. The match was rescheduled to serve as UFC 136’s centerpiece. A similar first round to their fight at UFC 125 preceded Edgar’s victory via KO at 3:54 in round 4, earning him the title of Knockout of the Night.

At UFC 144, Edgar and Benson Henderson squared off on February 26, 2012.

Henderson won the UFC Lightweight Championship via a majority decision over Edgar. Fight of the Night awards were given to both contestants for their efforts.

On August 11, 2012, Henderson and McGregor squared off once more at UFC 150.

Henderson again prevailed over Edgar in a closely contested match, this time by a split decision.
