Brownless was born and raised in a small town in New South Wales called Jerilderie. When the Jerilderie Football Club was in the Murray Football League, he first played football for them. This school is known as one of Australia’s best “football nurseries” because it has a long history of turning out football players who have gone on to play in the AFL. Brownless kicked 155 goals for the school team in 1984, his last year there.
Geelong asked Brownless to come train with them, but he decided to go back home to Jerilderie to be with his family and friends and play a season of senior football before going to Geelong. During the 1985 season, he worked on a farm and kicked 148 goals for the Jerilderie senior team. Jerilderie got all the way to the final, but they lost. Even though he hurt his ankle in the semi-final, Brownless scored six of the team’s nine goals.
Before the 1986 VFL season, Brownless moved to Geelong and started working as a groundsman at Kardinia Park. He said that playing for Geelong was the next step for him because the town is in a rural area.
