How was it to become a professional skater?
It was hard more than anything else. I really liked it, but it wasn’t easy. When I was young, my parents broke up, and I moved to Huntington Beach with my dad. My dad didn’t like it when I took the bus to the skatepark, so I had to hide it from him. Back then, a lot of pros would hang out at the skateparks around there, so it was kind of like a meeting place for them. I wanted to show them how good I was and make them like me.
I really wanted to skate for Furnace (Skate Shop), so it was really cool to get that chance. Andrew Reynolds and Chad Fernandez brought me into World Industries after we met at a skatepark. They told me to take whatever I wanted, so I took about 15 skateboards and 20 t-shirts. I gave my friends boards and shirts. It was like having 10 Christmases at once.
I became a beginner, but my family didn’t like it. They were mean about it, but all I did was tell them to watch. You have to go get what you want if you want it enough. During that time, my shoulder popped out about 100 times, but I couldn’t stop to fix it because I was so close to becoming a pro. I wanted more than anything to see my name on a board.
I got my first pro board through World Industries and had shoulder surgery right away because I thought they wouldn’t let a guy go who they had just signed. I had to stop skating for six months, but then I started doing things like the Dew Tour, and everything took off.
