George Stephanopoulos was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, to parents Nickolitsa “Nikki” Gloria (née Chafos) and Robert George Stephanopoulos. His father is a Greek Orthodox priest and served as the dean emeritus of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York City for many years. His grandfather served as a priest at the Sts. After spending some time in Purchase, New York, Stephanopoulos went to the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, where he attended Orange High School in Pepper Pike until he graduated in 1978.
In 1982, Stephanopoulos attended Columbia University in New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and was honored with the highest possible grade, summa cum laude. He also served as the class salutatorian during that time. During his time at Columbia, in his junior year, he was not only given a Harry S. Truman Scholarship, but he was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Additionally, he worked as a sports broadcaster for the university’s radio station, 89.9 WKCR-FM, during his time there. During his time as a student, he split his time between Carman Hall and the East Campus area.
George made a pact with his father that he would one day pursue a degree in law, therefore he accepted a position in the office of Democratic Congressman Ed Feighan of Ohio in Washington, District of Columbia. After being hired, he was promoted to the position of chief of staff for Feighan.
As a Rhodes Scholar, Stephanopoulos attended Balliol College at the University of Oxford in England, where he received his Master of Arts degree in Theology in 1984. Stephanopoulos is currently serving as a member of the Senate of the United States.
Controversies
Real estate loan scandal
In 1994, columnist Jack Anderson reported that Stephanopoulos had signed a $835,000 commercial real estate deal consisting of a two-story apartment that included an eyewear retailer, with a below-market loan rate from a bank owned by Hugh McColl, who had been called by President Clinton “the most enlightened banker in America.” Stephanopoulos’ loan came from a bank that was owned by Hugh McColl. According to a commercial loan officer working for NationsBank, this particular loan did “not fit our product matrix.” Typically, financial institutions will only provide this type of loan to clients who have substantial assets and do so on a short-term, adjustable rate basis. The real estate agent representing Stephanopoulos explained that “nobody making $125,000 could qualify for the property without the commercial property (lease).” Stephanopoulos is the one who made this statement. Anderson was informed by a former senior bank supervisor that the loan would not have been approved “if his name was George Smith and he did not work in the White House.”
In response to the situation, NationsBank issued the following statement: “The loan characterized by Jack Anderson as a commercial loan to George Stephanopoulos was, in fact, a domestic mortgage loan.” Mr. Anderson (or his imagined ‘George Smith’ who ‘doesn’t work in the White House’) could have stepped into any NationsBank Mortgage Company office in the D.C. area at the time the loan commitment was made and received the same excellent rate and term for the identical deal. ”
However, Stephanopoulos’s real estate agent claims that he would not have been able to meet the requirements for the loan if it weren’t for the rent from the commercial property. According to one source affiliated with NationsBank, the issuing of a residential loan for mixed-use properties is so uncommon that the topic was not even covered in the “NationsBank Mortgage Corporation’s Program Summary” or the “Credit Policy Manual” of the NationsBank Mortgage Corporation. According to a memorandum of underwriting that was provided by NationsBank, one of the three requirements for mixed-use properties is that “the borrower must be the owner of the business company.” According to the source, NationsBank is reported to have informed the listing agent that although they are not interested in mixed-use properties, they do have an appetite for this particular loan. Comptroller of the Currency Eugene Ludwig was NationsBank’s chief regulator at the time. Ludwig was a Rhodes scholar who attended Yale Law School with President Clinton. Democratic congressman Henry B. Gonzalez and John Dingell had requested Ludwig to investigate NationsBank.
Donations to charitable causes made by the Clinton Foundation
Stephanopoulos made three separate donations of $25,000 to the Clinton Foundation in the years 2012, 2013, and 2014, for a total of $75,000; however, he did not disclose these payments to ABC News, his employer, or to his viewers. Even on April 26, 2015, while interviewing Peter Schweizer, the author of Clinton Cash, Stephanopoulos failed to reveal the donations. Clinton Cash is a book that makes the allegation that donations to the Foundation influenced some of Hillary Clinton’s actions while she was Secretary of State. Stephanopoulos failed to reveal the donations. Following the disclosure of the donations by Politico on May 14, 2015, Stephanopoulos issued an apology and acknowledged that he should have revealed the funds to ABC News and the viewers of that network. The Washington Free Beacon was the first publication to report the news when the publication contacted ABC News to inquire about the situation. The donations had been reported by the Clinton Foundation, which Stephanopoulos had assumed to be sufficient. Stephanopoulos’s reliance on the Clinton Foundation was described as “an honest error” by ABC News.
The Republican party leaders and candidates have expressed their mistrust in Stephanopoulos and have called for him to be barred from moderating the 2016 presidential debates due to bias and a conflict of interest. This distrust is based on Stephanopoulos’s donations to the charitable organization The Clinton Foundation as well as his behavior during previous interviews and debates for the presidency. He consented to step down from his role as moderator for the Republican primary debate that was set to take place in February of 2016.
A month before he made his revelation, Stephanopoulos stated on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart that when money is given to the Clinton Foundation, “everybody” knows there’s “a hope that that’s going to lead to something, and that’s what you have to be careful of.” Stephanopoulos made this statement one month before he made his revelation.
Collaboration with Jeffrey Epstein
In 2010, Stephanopoulos was one of the guests at a dinner party held at the home of convicted sex offender and socialite Jeffrey Epstein. Other notable guests included Chelsea Handler, Woody Allen, Katie Couric, Prince Andrew, Charlie Rose, and Eva Andersson-Dubin. Stephanopoulos was also in attendance. After Epstein was arrested in July 2019, the party was brought back up online, and those who attended received criticism. In response, Stephanopoulos denied being friends with Epstein, stating that the party was the only encounter between the two of them.
In an interview with The New York Times, Stephanopoulos said, “That dinner was the first and last time I’ve seen him, I should have done more due research.” It was a poor decision on your part to depart.”
