Two years after not being picked in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Draft, Simmonds was picked by the Owen Sound Attack in the sixth round, 114th overall, in the 2006 OHL Priority Selection. He was 18 years old at the time.
Simmonds played for the Owen Sound Attack and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for two seasons in the OHL from 2006 to 2008. This was the last time he played in the major junior league. During the 2008 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, he also played for Canada. Chris Stewart and Wayne Simmonds became friends when they were both on the Jr. Canadiens. Later, they bought a house together in Toronto, where they lived when the season wasn’t going on.
Professional
Simmonds was taken 61st overall in the second round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. He shoots with his right hand. He was one of three new players on the team’s roster for the 2008–09 season. Simmonds scored his first NHL goal on October 14, 2008, in his third game. He put a rebound past Jean-Sébastien Giguère of the Anaheim Ducks. Simmonds became a fan favorite among L.A. fans during his first season because of his strong work ethic on and off the ice. Simmonds wanted to improve his offensive output in his second NHL season. He had tied for the Kings’ pre-season lead in goals scored that year. Shortly before the All-Star break that season, the Kings tried to trade for Ilya Kovalchuk, who was then playing for the Atlanta Thrashers.
