A small number of sources say that Shiffer praised the attack on the U.S. Capitol Complex on January 6 and said that he had taken part in it. However, he was never arrested for any crime related to that attack.

Shiffer is said to have tried to break into the screening room at the FBI discipline office in Cincinnati around 9 a.m. on Thursday, according to police. He was seen carrying a nail gun and an AR-15 rifle, as well as body armor.
Then, he drove away in a Ford Crown Victoria along Interstate 71. The State Highway Patrol says that he fired shots from his car and that he was being chased on the 1-71 before getting off on State Route 73 and stopping at Smith Road, where he fired at police.
During the six-hour standoff that followed, officials tried to stop Shiffer and talk to him without using violence. Still, he fought back, and at about 3:45 p.m., he was killed at the tip.
Based on past events, Clinton County Emergency Management ordered all buildings within a mile of the scene to lock down and told everyone inside to stay inside.
