Production

Development

In March of 2018, it was announced that Pushkar–Gayathri would be directing a Hindi version of their Tamil film Vikram Vedha (2017). The film would once again be produced by YNOT Studios. Neeraj Pandey is serving in the role of creative producer for the movie, which is being jointly produced by Friday Filmworks, T-Series Films, and Reliance Entertainment. The original movie had a “gritty” atmosphere, and Pushkar–Gayathri wanted the remade version to keep that same vibe. Although Pandey had previously avoided working on remakes due to his preference to write original material, he was interested in working on this project because of its parallels to Vikramaditya and Betal from the folktale collection Baital Pachisi, which he felt had not yet been done in Hindi cinema. Casting

The film’s producers attempted to recruit Shah Rukh Khan, but he turned down the offer. It was confirmed in the month of August 2019 that Saif Ali Khan and Aamir Khan would portray the roles of the criminal Vedha and the police officer Vikram, respectively. Saif differentiated Vikram from Sartaj Singh, another police officer he portrayed in the streaming television series Sacred Games, by stating that Vikram is “much more dynamic, confident, and strong.” Singh was suicidal, and he was constantly picked on by others. Saif said that Vikram is “much more dynamic, confident, and strong.” It was disclosed by Pushkar and Gayathri that they were unable to conceive R. Because to his commitments to Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, Madhavan will play the role of Vikram, which he originated in the first film (2022).

Aamir departed the movie in December 2020 amid production delays caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, during which the writers also rewrote the script. Shortly after Aamir’s departure, Hrithik Roshan took over as the lead actor in the film. After the film Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, this would be the second time that Saif and Roshan would appear on screen together (2002). Roshan made the decision to talk with an Awadhi accent in order to sound more like Vedha, who is from Kanpur. Radhika Apte was chosen to play the role of Vikram’s lawyer wife in the month of July, while Rohit Saraf was selected to play Vedha’s sibling in the month that followed. By November 2021, it was established that Sharib Hashmi would play the role of Babloo in the movie. Yogita Bihani was selected to play the role of Chanda in March of 2022.

Filming

When Aamir Khan was a part of the cast, the production was scheduled to kick off principal filming in February of 2021. After Roshan took over in that capacity, the competition was scheduled to begin in June 2021; however, it did not get underway until October 15 of that year, with the first schedule being held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). A portion of the sets that were initially constructed for Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) were altered by the crew working for Vikram Vedha to look like they were in either Lucknow or Kanpur before the schedule began. Reliance explained that the United Arab Emirates was “the only location providing the infrastructure for a bio-bubble that accommodated crew of such scale, also allowing building of sets in a studio during the preceding months of the shoot,” and that the film was shot there due to “health and protocol concerns.” This was in response to reports that Roshan refused to shoot in Lucknow and asked the crew to create the Lucknow sets in Abu Dhabi, which caused the budget to increase. They went on to say that actors do not have any say in the selection of shooting sites or the allocation of the film’s money. Following the conclusion of the Abu Dhabi schedule after 27 working days, the first leg of the second schedule started in Lucknow at the beginning of December. By the conclusion of the month, Saif Ali Khan had completed all of his assigned tasks for the programme. Apte, whose shooting schedule lasted barely 10 days, had completed the most of her parts by the 26th of April, 2022. The shoot was finished on June 10th, 2022.

Reception

India

According to Bollywood Hungama, who gave the movie a grade of 4/5, “Vikram Vedha is a wonderful massy fare that works thanks to the strong script, unpredictable moments, outstanding performances by Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan, and the electrifying background score.” The Times Now reviewer Sanchita Jhunjhunwala gave the movie four out of five stars and stated, “There are plenty of highs in the movie, including the narrative that builds up, the setting that the makers have created, and the so many characters involved. The film boasts of some absolutely mind-blowing shots, and due credits to the director duo for the same.” Vikram Vedha received a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars from India Today’s Tushar Joshi, who also stated, “Vikram Vedha is shamelessly massy, a lot of fun, and has two rock-solid performers in Hrithik and Saif.” The Times of India’s Rachana Dubey gave the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and said of Hrithik, “He is threatening, ruthless and highly emotional in moments. Pushkar-Gayathri have pretty much maintained to the blue-print they drew for the original. It’s a bonus that they haven’t changed the roadmap too much.” Lehren professor Bharathi Pradhan gave the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and described it as a “double win.” In which one are the engrossing performances of Saif and Hrithik, and in which two are the husband-and-wife team’s distinctive, layered style, awesomeness in the visuals and in the action, played out with a signature background score.
