Shraddha Kapoor’s Early Years

Kapoor with her father Shakti Kapoor, who made a brief cameo appearance in her first movie.
Mumbai is where Kapoor was born and raised. Kapoor has Punjabi ancestry on her father’s side and Marathi and Konkani ancestry on her mother’s side. Her maternal grandmother was from Panaji, Goa, while her maternal grandpa was from Kolhapur. Pandharinath Kolhapure was Deenanath Mangeshkar’s nephew. As her maternal relatives lived in Maharashtra, Kapoor said in an interview with The Hindustan Times that she was reared as a Marathi. She has acknowledged having a tomboyish period as a young girl and describing herself as having a strong attitude, which led her to purposefully pick confrontations with boys.

The actors Padmini Kolhapure and Tejaswini Kolhapure, as well as Kapoor’s mother Shivangi Kapoor, father Shakti Kapoor, and older brother Siddhanth Kapoor, are all members of the Indian film industry. She is the great-niece of Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Meena Khadikar, and Lata Mangeshkar.

Kapoor, who comes from a family of actors, had wanted to be an actress since she was a little girl. She liked to practice movie language and dance to Bollywood tunes in front of the mirror while wearing her parents’ clothes. She used to go with her father to numerous filming places when she was a young girl. Actor Varun Dhawan and Kapoor became friends during one of David Dhawan’s filming sessions. They played together, acting out scenes while holding a flashlight in place of a camera and yelling lines from the script.

When she was 15 years old, Kapoor transferred from Jamnabai Narsee School to the American School of Bombay, where she studied with actors Tiger Shroff and Athiya Shetty. They all used to compete in dancing competitions, Shetty disclosed in an interview with The Times of India. Kapoor, who was then 17 years old, practiced handball and soccer because she thought these were difficult games.  In a 2016 interview with The Hindustan Times, Kapoor and Shroff both acknowledged that they had a crush on one another in high school but never exchanged romantic proposals.

Later, Kapoor enrolled at Boston University to study psychology[20], but she dropped out after her first year after producer Ambika Hinduja noticed her on Facebook and cast her for a part in Teen Patti.

Salman Khan offered Shakti Kapoor her first film, Lucky: No Time for Love, when she was just 16 years old after he watched her perform in one of her school plays, but she declined the offer because she wanted to be a psychologist. This was disclosed in an interview with the Filmfare magazine. Since her early years, Kapoor has had singing instruction from her maternal grandfather and her mother both sing classical music.

Shraddha Kapoor’s Career Struggles and Successes (2010–2016)

In the 2010 drama Teen Patti, which also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Ben Kingsley, and R. Madhavan, Kapoor made her acting debut. She took on the persona of a college student. Though her performance was better received, the movie earned largely unfavorable reviews. Though a little raw, Preeti Arora wrote for Rediff.com that the subject “has a lot of potential.” “Shraddha Kapoor makes a fascinating debut as the edgy youngster who sheds her eyeglasses for sleaze, with alacrity,” wrote Nikhat Kazmi in her review. Despite the film’s dismal box office performance, Kapoor was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. After making her film debut, she signed a three-picture contract with Yash Raj Films and co-starred with Taaha Shah in their 2011 adolescent comedy Luv Ka The End. In the major part, Kapoor played a teenage student who tries to get her boyfriend killed after he cheated on her. The movie did poorly at the box office, and reviews from critics were inconsistent.

Nevertheless, reviews of Kapoor’s performance were favorable. Posted by Taran Adarsh: “Shraddha is a marvel who completely takes you by surprise with her assured performance. When she breaks down after learning her lover’s actual motives in the sequence, she is electrifying.” Kapoor won the Stardust Searchlight Award for Best Actress for her performance. The lead female role in Aurangzeb was subsequently offered to Kapoor as a part of her contract with Yash Raj Films. She canceled the three-film deal with Yash Raj Films, however, by agreeing to work on Vishesh Films’ Aashiqui 2.

In the 2013 follow-up to the 1990 film Aashiqui, romantic musical drama Aashiqui 2, Kapoor played her first major role. She was chosen to play Aarohi Keshav Shirke, a small-town bar singer who, with the assistance of a well-known male singer, succeeds as a playback artist (played by Aditya Roy Kapur). A massive box office hit, the movie made $1.09 billion ($14 million) worldwide. Kapoor was praised as a “genuine triumph” by movie critic Anupama Chopra, who also noted that her “porcelain face has a disturbing vulnerability.” But as India Today’s Vinayak Chakravorty put it, she “looks lovely but fails to provide spark.” Kapoor was nominated for various awards, including one at the Filmfare Awards, in the Best Actress category. She also made a cameo role in the romantic comedy Gori Tere Pyaar Mein that year, playing the character’s fiancée opposite Imran Khan.

With Varun Dhawan, Kapoor Kapoor and Suri then reconnected for the thriller Ek Villain (2014), for which she also sung the song “Galliyan,” during the ABCD 2 promotional campaign in 2015. In the movie, Sidharth Malhotra plays a seasoned criminal whose terminally sick wife, played by Kapoor, is brutally killed by a serial killer. Despite Suri’s claims to the contrary, the movie was widely believed to be a copy of the Korean movie I Saw the Devil. Raedita Tandon of Filmfare referred to the movie as a “gritty, compelling thriller” in her review and said that Kapoor was a revelation in it.

The movie finally became a huge commercial success, grossing more than 1 billion yen ($13 million) domestically. Her second film that year was Vishal Bhardwaj’s critically praised movie Haider, a 1995 Kashmir war rendition of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Alongside Shahid Kapoor and Tabu, she portrayed the journalist character Arshia, who was based on Ophelia. Kusumita Das, a critic for the Deccan Chronicle, appreciated Kapoor’s attempt to capture the various nuanced aspects of her character and said that her depiction was “quite poised.” In the thriller Ungli, directed by Karan Johar, Kapoor also appeared in an item number.

In the dance movie ABCD: Any Body Can Dance sequel ABCD 2, which was released in 2015, Kapoor played a hip-hop dancer who participated in an international competition with her childhood buddy Suresh Mukund (essayed by Varun Dhawan).

She studied several dance forms with choreographers Prabhudeva and Remo D’Souza in order to get ready for her role. The movie, which was made by Walt Disney Pictures, brought in 1.57 billion yen ($20 million) globally, making it her most well-known work to that moment.

In the action movie Baaghi, about a couple of rebellious lovers set against the backdrop of a martial arts school, Kapoor made her acting debut in 2016. She played Tiger Shroff’s love interest. She had to practice Kalaripayattu for the part (a martial art originating in the south of India). She portrayed the love and action scenes “good enough,” although Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express said her character in it was dated. The movie did well financially, earning a total of 1.26 billion (US$16 million).
