Interviewer: In your new movie, Cigarette Soup, you play a soldier fighting in Afghanistan. Did you go through any special military training to prepare for the part?
Tobias Truvillion: Actually, that’s true. We had advisors on set who had been in the military and spent time in Afghanistan and the Middle East. They told us what it was like to be in the service and helped us with technical things. They also told us what it was like to be one of the guys. They spent so much time together, and we learned technical things like how to move as a group when entering a building and how to carry everything these young men have to carry all the time while fighting for our country. It was such a great time to pick these guys’ brains. We filmed it in a month, and even though we weren’t really at war, being in a bunker for that long gave you a sense of brotherhood and what it might have been like to fight in the real war. Some of the stories I heard from some of the guys were things that changed my life. Some of their best friends didn’t come back with them.
It was, said Tobias Truvillion. In fact, it was. One of my main goals was for them to see us put on a show for them. They were given praise.
Interviewer: So, what can you tell me about your character, Monti, and what he goes through in the movie?
Tobias Truvillion: At first glance, Monti seems like a tough, no-nonsense guy who is the unit’s muscle. He has one of the bigger artillery machine guns, and he doesn’t really play games. But once you get past the first layer, you start to really get to know him, and you realize that he’s just another young man who doesn’t have it all together and is fighting for his country. At some point in the movie, he realizes that if he doesn’t open up to the journalist who is embedded with the unit and tell his story, it may never be told, and he may never have a chance to be heard. So, when the movie gets to that part, you find out who he really is.
Tobias Truvillion: When I was younger, I played a lot of sports. Football is a team sport, and I’m the kind of person who works well in a group. I know how to lead, I know how to follow, and I could even be coachable. So rolling in the unit and playing Marines made me think of the locker room, the camaraderie and brotherhood between the boys, and other things like that. So it has parts of me in it, like the camaraderie and the desire to get the job done and be a part of the mission at hand. I could imagine being there. But I’m more of an outgoing person, while Monti is more shy. He walks around like he has something to prove. I’m nothing like that at all. I’m more open and free, and I like to talk to people. Monti wasn’t as open as he could have been. But there were bits and pieces of it there.
Tobias Truvillion: Well, I want to do my best and be honest in every role I play. Even in my current role on Empire, I play a man who is “on the down low,” which means he is gay. And since I am a heterosexual man, that was a stretch and new territory for me. As an actor, I always want to play characters and do work that pushes me. It should be stuff that scares me a little bit, because we are artists. So you want to be with characters and stories that make you a little bit scared. I would like to do work like that. So, I try to push myself and find interesting ways to play these characters, even if it’s not always what’s on the surface or on the paper. It might read a certain way, but it’s a challenge to try to get to the bottom of things and find out who the character really is. And the work I want to do is to play roles that are outside of my comfort zone or have nothing to do with who I am. This is the work I do now and will continue to do in the future.
Oh, yeah! said Tobias Truvillion. When I played Vincent Jones on One Life to Live, he wasn’t really a bad guy, but because he did some sneaky things to other characters, he got a bad name. This used to happen to me, too. People would approach me and tell me things like, “Stop doing that! ” or “You can’t be that way to Cristian (David Fumero)! “[Laughs] People love their TV, they love the content, they love the stories and the shows. They care about them, and sometimes, when they see you on the street, they think you’re the real character and you have to tell them, “No! I’m not like that, that’s not who I am! ” [Laughs]

Tobias Truvillion: It does happen on Empire, and sometimes people don’t know what to say. People will come up to me and call me “D-Major,” so I have to tell them, “My name is Tobias. “The character I play is D-Major.” Most people know, though, that you are acting. And I’ve been working as an actor my whole adult life, so people know my work and sometimes recognize me as an actor when they see me. It’s a little bit of both, then. Some people know me from Empire and say, “Okay, this guy is definitely not gay, and he’s playing D-Major.” Others say, “Man, he’s doing such a great job, so I’m not sure — is he really gay?! “[Laughs] But it’s our job to play these characters as well as we can, so I guess when you do that, people care and believe it, which is what you want.
Tobias Truvillion: Empire, if you ask me. It’s big. It is the most popular show in the whole world. It’s watched by about 12 million people every week. And it has definitely made a huge difference in how popular I am. People may have known my face before, but they may not have known my name. Now, when I walk down the street, people say my name. Or I’ll say, “Hi, my name is Tobias,” and they’ll say, “I know who you are! ” [Laughs] And I find that very strange! I mean, I’m just a regular guy. I’m from New York, I ride the subway, I teach in the schools, and sometimes I show up in stores. When that happens, people are really surprised to see me there with them. So Empire has made a big difference.
Oh, it’s great, says Tobias Truvillion. It was great to be on the soaps. I think about all the people I worked with at the time, and when I see them now, it’s like, David Fumero [ex-Cristian Vega] is on Power, Tika [Sumpter, ex-Layla Williamson], who’s doing great things, and Renee Elise Goldsberry [ex-Evangeline Williamson], who’s destroying the stage on Broadway. I think about all my friends, who are all doing big things and doing well on other shows and platforms. And the people who support us and follow us have been with us the whole time. It’s a great thing that makes you feel so good. They can’t wait to see you at work and to see how your career goes. I like that, and I’m glad they do it. Every now and then, someone will say to me, “I remember you from the soaps! “But sometimes people get confused because I like to play different characters and have different hair. Then, when they see me on Empire or Law and Order or something, they’ll say, “Oh yeah, that was you on the soap opera! So, it’s a great thing.” I really appreciate how loyal soap fans are. A few weeks ago, I even went to the Daytime Emmys! Just being in the daytime world and with the fans was a great experience. And I hadn’t seen so many people in a long time. Like my friend Lawrence Saint-Victor, who plays Carter Walton on The Bold and the Beautiful. I also got to talk to Frank Valentini, who used to be the executive producer of OLTL and is now the executive producer of General Hospital. These people help me, and I’m happy to help them back. It was nice to see the people from “Daytime” and hang out with fans again. It felt wonderful.
