Oddballs is about a bubble-shaped boy named James (who is named after the YouTuber who made the show, James Rallison) and his best friend Max, an alligator. If that sounds boring, that’s because it is. The show’s premise isn’t good enough to justify 12 episodes, let alone episodes that are as long as they are. On average, Rallison’s videos are eight or nine minutes long, but each episode of Oddballs is 16 minutes long, and holy cow, that’s a big difference. Each episode is hard to get through, and by the time you’re done with the third, you’ll feel like you’ve gone through six episodes.

The length of each episode also doesn’t make much sense. Most cartoons, like The Loud House, The Amazing World of Gumball, We Bare Bears, and The Cuphead Show, have eleven-minute episodes. If an animated show is longer, it’s usually because it has a bigger cast of characters or a bigger plot, like The Legend of Korra or The Simpsons. There is no continuity in Oddballs, and there are only two main characters, James and Max. The length of the show really doesn’t make sense, and it hurts the show a lot because of it.

It’s a half-baked joke where the only funny part is a character doing something silly.

Lampshading humor is another type of humor that is used a lot on this show. This is when something that doesn’t make sense is explained away by the show admitting that it doesn’t make sense and then moving on. This is a cartoon, so no one is looking for realism, and the jokes about the jokes quickly get annoying. It’s like having a conversation with someone who is always talking about how annoying they are. Yes, we’re aware of how annoying you are. By being self-aware about it, you’re making things worse.

This show’s jokes are bad, and they’re bad in a big way. Because of this, it’s crazy clear that the people who wrote it didn’t put much thought into it, and that the episodes don’t have much to offer besides the bad jokes. The humor in The Cuphead Show also didn’t work, but it had beautiful animation, colorful worlds, and even a few characters you could like. None of those are in Oddballs.

Its animation isn’t anything special; it’s just a few steps above what we’ve come to expect from TheOdd1sOut. All of the character and setting designs look so amateurish, which is fine when you’re watching a free YouTube video, but not when you’re paying for a Netflix subscription and expecting professional quality.

The world of Oddball is so simple that I’m not even sure it gets to that level. It’s more like a skeleton with 100 or so bones missing. If you put the world of Oddballs next to, say, Springfield from The Simpsons or Bikini Bottom from SpongeBob, you can see right away how empty it feels. There is no culture or community in this town. It seems like James’s home and school are the only places in the world. Every other place they go to feels like it only exists when James and Max are there. As soon as they leave, the places are gone.

James and Max aren’t the only ones who are like this. Every once in a while, they’ll say or do something annoying, but other than that, they’re so dull and lifeless that they’re not really characters—they’re just chess pieces in a story. Again, compare this to shows like The Simpsons and SpongeBob, where the characters seemed real and had lives beyond what we saw on screen. Even James and Max feel pretty boring, as they do nothing but loud, random, and often annoying things.

There’s nothing about this show that makes it worth taking up space in Netflix’s library. It looks like it’s not done, and the scripts for each episode feel like rough drafts. There are many original animated shows on Netflix, like The Dragon Prince, Hilda, and The Cuphead Show. Not all of them are great, but they deserve your attention much, much more than Oddballs does.
