Kindred: Plot, Review, Premium, Trailer, Spoilers, Where To Watch and More
The most annoying aspect of the British prenatal horror film “Kindred” is not that it lacks personalization, but rather that it lacks sufficient personalization.
This paranoid thriller, which follows recently widowed Charlotte (Tamara Lawrance) as she battles to maintain control of her body (and unborn child) despite interference from her mother-in-law Margaret (Fiona Shaw) and her shy, infatuated stepbrother-in-law Thomas, contains moments of lived-in tenderness (Jack Lowden).
The way Margaret stutters and tucks her handkerchief down her sleeve, as well as Thomas’s unaware smile—the latter of which is a classic representation of the character’s nature as an insecure people-pleaser—especially captured my attention (especially if those people are women).

Kindred: Plot
Young black woman Dana celebrates her 26th birthday on June 9th, 1976. She settles into their new Southern California residence with her white husband Kevin Franklin.
The majority of the unpacking and settling in is handled by Dana; Kevin concentrates on his office before ceasing to assist.
Dana becomes disoriented, and her surrounds vanish. When she awakens, she discovers herself in Maryland in the early 1800s.
Rufus, a little white child, is having difficulty in a river. Dana dives in after him, but by the time she gets to him, he is already dead.
She carries him to the shore where she gives him CPR. Dana is startled when Rufus’s father, Tom Weylin, enters the room and aims a revolver at her. She reappears in her flat in 1976 after experiencing yet another bout of vertigo.
A few minutes later, Dana faints once more and vanishes. She is transported back to 1815 this time. A few years older now, Rufus watches in terror as his bedroom curtains catch fire.
Because he was upset with his father for selling a horse he desired, he had set them on fire. Before Weylin realizes she is there, Dana extinguishes the fire, speaks with Rufus, and leaves the house.
Dana rushes to the house of free blacks Alice Greenwood and her mother, who she believes might be her relatives.
The door of the Greenwoods is broken down by a bunch of young white males, who then pull out Alice’s slave husband and beat him.
Mother of Alice was also assaulted. Dana emerges from hiding after the men have left and assists Alice’s mother.
When Dana goes outside, a white man who has just returned catches her, beats her, and makes an attempt to rape her. Dana worries about dying. She experiences another round of vertigo and goes back to her house in her own time.
Kindred: Trailer
The following time Dana goes back in time, Kevin joins her by holding on to her. Rufus shattered his leg after falling out of a tree back at the Weylins’ house.
Young black youngster Nigel goes for assistance, and Weylin responds with his slave, Luke. Dana is prevented from leaving by Rufus, so everyone enters the home together.
For several weeks, Kevin and Dana remain on the estate and assist with Rufus’ education. Weylin, however, spanks Dana after she is discovered teaching Nigel to read. Dana goes back to 1976, but Kevin is late and cannot accompany her.
Dana time-travels back after spending eight days at home and discovers that Kevin has departed the Maryland region and that Rufus has sexually assaulted Alice Greenwood.
Isaac, a slave who is Alice’s husband, is brutally abusing Rufus.
Dana persuades Isaac not to kill Rufus, and while Dana brings Rufus home, Alice and Isaac flee. She spends two months in Maryland.
Alice and Isaac are discovered and Alice is attacked by dogs while Rufus lies about how he was hurt. Alice is converted into a slave as retribution for assisting Isaac in escaping.
Alice is purchased by Rufus, who falls in love with her. After Alice’s body has healed, he compels Dana to persuade her to sleep with him.
Dana tries to flee after Rufus fails to deliver her letters to Kevin. She thus endures a cruel beating that so traumatizes and terrifies her that she is unable to flee once more.
When Kevin arrives as promised by Weylin, the pair makes an effort to flee. They are shot at by Rufus when he spots them on the road, but they are able to travel back in time together to the 1970s.
After a few days, Dana time goes back to Maryland by herself and discovers Rufus inebriated and face-down in a puddle. Weylin declines to see a physician.
Dana takes care of Rufus for a number of days as he recovers. For several weeks, Rufus is weak. Weylin suffers from a heart attack, and Dana is powerless to intervene.
Rufus holds her responsible for the passing of his father and makes her toil in the fields until she passes out.
Compared to Dana, Rufus is more rougher with Alice. Alice feels envious of Rufus’ generosity toward Dana. Hagar, Dana’s direct ancestor, is born to Alice and Rufus as their second child.
She informs Dana that she intends to flee as soon as possible. She worries that she is growing too accustomed to Rufus and that she no longer hates him intensely enough.
Margaret, Weylin’s wife, comes back. Dana is compelled to look after her. One of the slaves that Rufus sells is Tess, who was formerly his father’s mistress.
Sam, a field worker, is also sold by him as retribution for flirting with Dana. Rufus strikes Dana when she attempts to get in the way. She cuts her wrists in an attempt to travel across time, and she succeeds.

Kindred: Spoiler
The movie opens with Charlotte (Tamara Lawrance) waking up and going to the kitchen to see her boyfriend Ben (Edward Holcroft).
Ben worries that his mother Margaret (Fiona Shaw), who they are getting ready to see, won’t handle the news well and would grow angry with him.
The two visit Margaret at her residence, where she resides with her stepson Thomas (Jack Lowden). Margaret is informed by Charlotte and Ben that they intend to relocate to Florida.
She is understandably angry about it, but Ben insists that they have already made up their minds.
Later, Charlotte walks to the stables to work with her friend Jane (Chloe Pirrie), but Charlotte begins to feel lightheaded and eventually throws up.
Charlotte finds she is pregnant while visiting the hospital with Jane. Dr. Richards (Anton Lesser) advises her to go home and discuss it with Ben after she is stunned and considers not keeping the baby.
That evening, Ben admits he is aware of the pregnancy because Dr. Richards informed Margaret, who then notified Ben. Ben is looking forward to being a father.
But Charlotte is still annoyed by it. When they come back to Margaret’s house, she advises them to be married as soon as possible.
Margaret refuses to accept that they will take her grandchild away from her despite Ben’s claims that they are still focused on Australia.
They return to Charlotte’s house, where she had smoked a joint with Jane and was complaining about having children.
After coming back, Ben visits the barn to feed Bonnie, their horse. Later, Bonnie gives Ben a severe kick to the head, critically hurting him.
Ben loses consciousness in the car after Charlotte and Jane carry him there. At the hospital, where they are joined by Margaret and Thomas, the doctor breaks the heartbreaking news that Ben has passed away.
While Margaret is sobbing over the death of her son, Charlotte attacks her after Margaret accuses her of being to blame. Thomas then frees Charlotte. Charlotte collapses as she moves on.
Margaret’s home is where Charlotte awakens. She is being cared for by Thomas, who is feeding and housing her.
Margaret also adds that Charlotte has no alternative but to stay with Ben’s family because Charlotte and Ben’s home has been sold.
Later, Margaret holds Ben’s funeral on the estate’s grounds. After Thomas has finished playing the piano and left, Charlotte temporarily closes her eyes and then seems to awaken later, alone in the dark and seeing odd sights, such as a recurring image of a crow.
Charlotte continues to have bizarre nightmares while staying at the house, and she is unsure if she was conscious when she witnessed what she did.
For instance, she remembers nothing about getting a cut on her hand when she wakes up. Jane is concerned when Charlotte informs her that Dr. Richards has checked on her pregnancy and has determined that she does not require scans.
In the end, Charlotte and Thomas decide to visit the hospital nevertheless. Charlotte asks Thomas to get her water after the scan, but she tells the ultrasound technician that she believes Margaret and Thomas are holding her against her will because they damaged her phone and might have drugged her tea to cause hallucinations.
When the technician returns with Dr. Richards, he simply tells her to go home since he believes she is simply experiencing pregnancy-related hysteria.
