How I grew up and went to school

Hackman’s parents, Eugene Ezra Hackman and Anna Lyda Elizabeth (née Gray), had him in San Bernardino, California. Richard is his only brother. He comes from Pennsylvania Dutch, English, and Scottish families, and his mother was born in Lambton, Ontario, Canada. His family moved around a lot, but they finally settled down in Danville, Illinois, where they lived in his English-born maternal grandmother Beatrice’s house. Hackman’s father ran the printing press for a local paper called the Commercial-News.  When he was 13, his parents split up, and his father left the family. Hackman decided when he was 10 that he wanted to be an actor.

Hackman lived in Storm Lake, Iowa, for a short time and went to Storm Lake High School for his sophomore year. He ran away from home when he was 16 and lied about his age to join the Marine Corps. He was a field radio operator for four and a half years. He lived and worked in China (Qingdao and later in Shanghai). In 1949, when the Communist Revolution took over the rest of the country, Hackman was sent to Hawaii and Japan. After he got out of the military in 1951, he moved to New York City and worked at several places. In 1962, his mother died in a fire that she started by accident while she was smoking. Using the G.I. Bill, he started to study journalism and TV production at the University of Illinois, but he quit and moved back to California.

I wanted to be an actor ever since I was 10 and saw my first movie. I was so drawn in by the action guys that I wanted to be one of them. Jimmy Cagney was the one I liked best. Without knowing it, I could see that he had great timing and a lot of energy.

Career

In 1956, Hackman started to work as an actor. He went to the Pasadena Playhouse in California, where he met Dustin Hoffman, who also wanted to be an actor. Hackman and Hoffman were voted “The Least Likely to Succeed,” and Hackman got the lowest score the Pasadena Playhouse had ever given. Hackman moved to New York City to show them that they were wrong. In a 2004 article in Vanity Fair, Hackman, Hoffman, and Robert Duvall were described as struggling actors from California who were close friends and shared apartments in New York City in the 1960s. Hackman was working at a Howard Johnson’s to make money between acting jobs when he met an instructor from the Pasadena Playhouse. The instructor told Hackman that his job showed that he “wouldn’t amount to anything.” “Hackman, you’re a sorry son of a bitch,” said a Marine officer who saw him working as a doorman. Hackman was driven by being turned down. He said,

I wasn’t going to let those jerks bring me down, so it was more psychological warfare. I told myself I would keep trying whatever it took to find a job. It was like me against them, and I still feel that way in some ways. But if you really want to be an actor, I think there’s a part of you that likes the challenge. It’s like a drug because you’ve been trained to do this work but no one will let you, so you’ve gone a little bit crazy. You tell lies, cheat, and do whatever else it takes to get an audition or a job.

Hackman got a few small parts, like on the TV show Route 66 in 1963, and started to act in a number of Off-Broadway plays. In 1964, he was asked to act with Sandy Dennis in the play Any Wednesday. This gave him a chance to work in movies. His first part was in the movie Lilith, which was led by Jean Seberg and Warren Beatty. In 1966, he had a small role in the movie Hawaii as Dr. John Whipple. In 1967, he was in “The Spores,” which was an episode of the TV show The Invaders. In the 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde, he played a supporting character named Buck Barrow. This role got him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 1968, he played the part of “Hunter” on an episode of I Spy called “Happy Birthday, Everyone.” In the same year, he was in “My Father and My Mother,” an episode of CBS Playhouse, and “Shadow on the Land,” a dystopian TV movie. In the 1969 movies Downhill Racer and Marooned, he played a ski coach and an astronaut, respectively. In the same year, he also played a member of a barnstorming skydiving team that mostly performed at county fairs. This role was in the movie The Gypsy Moths, which inspired many people to take up skydiving and has a cult-like status among skydivers because of it. He almost took the part of Mike Brady in the TV show The Brady Bunch, but his agent told him to turn it down in favor of a better role, which he did.
