Former Coaches and Choreographers
The majority of Hanyu’s career up until the 2011–12 season was steered in the right direction by Nanami Abe in Sendai. He said, “I have to say [Hanyu] is probably the first athlete that truly realises what I’m doing with him.” Briand has been working with Hanyu since 2014. After Hanyu turned professional, Briand made it clear that he would continue to collaborate with him in any situation in which it was necessary to do so.
Nanami Abe was responsible for the choreography of each and every one of Hanyu’s programmes that he performed during his junior career. His performances began having choreography created by other individuals beginning with the 2012–2013 season, with Shae-Lynn Bourne and Jeffrey Buttle serving as frequent collaborators. In addition, Hanyu has cooperated on a number of display programmes with Canadian choreographer David Wilson, with whom he has worked for a number of years, including the free skate programme that Wilson created for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
