Donovan Jamal McNabb was born on November 25, 1976. He was an American football quarterback who played most of his career in the National Football League (NFL) with the Philadelphia Eagles. He retired in 2013. Before going to the NFL, he played basketball and football for Syracuse University. He was the second player picked by the Eagles in the 1999 NFL Draft. McNabb played for the Washington Redskins and the Minnesota Vikings for one season each, and then he played for the Eagles for eleven years.
From 1999 to 2009, McNabb was the Eagles’ starter at quarterback. During his time with the team, they went to the playoffs eight times (2000-2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009), won five NFC East division titles (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006), played in five NFC Championship games (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2008), and went to Super Bowl XXXIX, which they lost to the New England Patriots 24-21. McNabb was born and raised in Chicago, which is in the state of Illinois. As a sophomore at Mount Carmel High School, he played with Simeon Rice and Matt Cushing, who both went on to play in the NFL. Together, they helped Mount Carmel High School win the 1991 State Championship by beating Wheaton Central High School.
As a senior, he led the team to win the Chicago Prep Bowl. He also did well in track and field and played basketball with Antoine Walker when he was in high school.
Donovan McNabb’s College Career
Even though recruiters from many schools talked to McNabb, only Syracuse University and the University of Nebraska gave him scholarships to play quarterback in college football.
At first, he was thinking about going to Nebraska because he was excited about playing for Tom Osborne. But in the end, he chose to go to Syracuse and play football for the Syracuse Orange, mostly to show that he was a good “pocket passer,” but also because of their broadcast journalism school.
After a redshirt year as a freshman at Syracuse in 1994, McNabb started every game for the rest of his college career, going 35-14.
As a freshman, he was responsible for 354 yards of offence. His 96-yard touchdown pass against West Virginia University was the longest in Syracuse history. At the end of the season, he was named the rookie of the year by the Big East Conference.
McNabb had 2,892 yards of total offence in his junior year, which was more than the previous school record.
