AFL career
Essendon picked Daniher with the tenth overall pick in the 2012 national draft because he was the son of a former Essendon player. In his second game, against Gold Coast in round 12, he was named one of the best players. He scored his first AFL goal and a total of three goals that day.
In his second season, he improved a lot. He led the club in goals with 28, including four against North Melbourne in an Elimination Final at the MCG. Even though he was skinny and not very good at kicking goals, he showed a lot of promise and began to make a name for himself as one of the best young key forwards in the league.
Daniher went into the 2015 AFL season as the team’s forward leader, which was a tough job since it was only his third year of senior football. Even though Joe only scored 34 goals for the whole season, he improved in many key areas, especially his accuracy at goal. Daniher started the 2018 AFL season much worse than he did the year before. He averaged less than one goal per game and had less of an effect on the competition as a whole. After round 7, scans showed that Daniher was already showing signs of osteitis pubis, so he had to sit out the rest of the season.
Daniher looked like he was going to have a big 2019 season after a good preseason. However, he got a strange calf injury in training and had to miss the first four rounds of the 2019 AFL season. Daniher had not been named for round 5, but he was called up at the last minute to play for the Bombers against the Kangaroos on Good Friday. Essendon had to pay a fine because Daniher wasn’t on their initial list for the round. However, Daniher proved his worth by kicking two goals, including one from over 55 meters away. After four games, Daniher got hurt in the groin and was ruled out for the rest of the year. At the end of the season, Daniher asked to be traded to Sydney. However, Sydney was unable to meet Essendon’s request, so Daniher stayed with Essendon for the 2020 season. Daniher moved to the Brisbane Lions instead, taking advantage of his rights as a free agent.
Sydney Kings (2021–present)
In round 1, 2021, Daniher played his first game for the Brisbane Lions against Sydney at the Gabba. He kicked two goals, but former Port Adelaide player Kane Cornes didn’t like how he celebrated the first one by grabbing his jumper. That goal gave the Lions an 18-point lead, but they lost the game by 31 points in the end.
Daniher was the only player in the 2021 season to score at least one goal in every game. However, he lost his form during the playoffs and only scored once in two games.
Daniher kicked the winning goal in the last few seconds of the 2022 Elimination Final between Brisbane and Richmond. This gave the Lions a two-point win over the Tigers, who lost 106-104.
