Former professional soccer player Carli Anne Hollins (née Lloyd; born July 16, 1982) is an American. She has won two gold medals at the Olympics (2008 and 2012), two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles (2015 and 2019), two FIFA Player of the Years (2015 and 2016), and four Olympic gold medals (2008, 2012, 2016 and 2021). In the Olympic gold-medal games of both the 2008 and 2012 games, Lloyd scored the game-winning goals. In addition, Lloyd played for the team at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where the United States came in second, and helped the team win titles at the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cups as well as the bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Carli Lloyd’s Early Years
Carli Lloyd was raised in Delran Township, a South Jersey neighborhood about 20 minutes northeast of Philadelphia, where she was born to Stephen and Pamela Lloyd. Five years old was Lloyd’s first soccer season. When asked about playing soccer when she was little, Pamela, Lloyd’s mother, said, “Carli was hanging out with the boys because the school at that age was coed. She has always enjoyed it and displayed considerable talent from a young age, but she has also always put in a lot of effort.” Stephen is Lloyd’s brother, and Ashley is his sister.
The 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup opening match Lloyd attended gave her the motivation to join the national squad.
From 1997 to 2000, Lloyd attended Delran High School, where she played soccer while being coached by the late Rudy “The Red Baron” Klobach.

Scarlet Knights of Rutgers, 2001–2004
Glenn Crooks was Lloyd’s head coach while she played for the Scarlet Knights women’s soccer team at Rutgers University from 2001 to 2004. She was the first athlete at Rutgers to receive First-Team All-Big East honors four years in a row. She finished her undergraduate career with the most points (117), goals (50), and shots ever recorded at her school.
In her first season, Lloyd played in every game and led the squad in scoring with 15 goals and 37 points. She was the first player from Rutgers to win Big East Rookie of the Year honors and was selected to Soccer America’s All-Freshman Team. She led the team in scoring as a sophomore for the second year in a row with 12 goals and 7 assists for 31 points. Lloyd was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy that year, which is generally regarded as the top honor for collegiate soccer players. She earned 28 points in her third season with the Scarlet Knights, scoring 13 goals and dishing out two assists, earning her the title of Big East Academic All-Star. Club Career of Carli Lloyd
Lloyd participated in W-League games for the Central Jersey Splash in 1999, the New Brunswick Power in 2000, and the South Jersey Banshees in 2001 while still a high school student.
Kelly Smith, Manya Makoski, Tobin Heath, and Heather O’Reilly were teammates as Lloyd competed for the New Jersey Wildcats in 2004 during the summer before her final year at Rutgers. For the club, she only made one appearance.
The WPS Period (2009–2011)
In 2008, the Chicago Red Stars received Lloyd’s playing rights after Women’s Professional Soccer brought back a top-tier women’s professional soccer league to the United States.
She played a total of 1,313 minutes on the field while starting 14 of her 16 games for Chicago during the league’s debut season. She scored twice, once in the 23rd minute of their 4-0 victory over the Boston Breakers on April 25 and once in the 24th minute of their 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Sol on August 2. The Red Stars had a 5-10-5 record and placed sixth overall.
After the season ended, Lloyd was made a free agent and joined with Sky Blue FC, the 2009 WPS winners and her home state team, for the 2010 campaign.
During a game against her old team, the Chicago Red Stars, in April 2010, Lloyd slipped and shattered her ankle.
She missed the majority of the season because of the injury, but she did play in two games in September.
Lloyd committed to the expansion Atlanta Beat in December 2010 for the 2011 campaign.
James Galanis, head coach of the Beat, stated on her signing, “She is an excellent midfielder who is totally devoted to the game. I’ve known her since she was in college, and I’ve had the chance to work with her one-on-one to help her develop her skills. She has made many sacrifices off the field in order to pursue her goals, and she will add a great deal of professionalism to the group.” In her ten games with the Beat, Lloyd scored twice. On April 9, the squad lost 4-1 against the Boston Breakers, and she scored the lone goal. In a 2-2 draw with the Western New York Flash, her second goal of the year came in the 70th minute to tie the game. With a 1-13-4 record, The Beat concluded their inaugural campaign in last place.
Flash Western New York (2013–2014)
As part of the NWSL Player Allocation, Lloyd joined the Western New York Flash on January 11, 2013, in the brand-new National Women’s Soccer League.
On May 12, 2013, during the team’s 2-1 victory over FC Kansas City, Lloyd made her debut for the Flash after recuperating from a shoulder injury she had sustained earlier in the year. In a game the Flash played against Sky Blue FC, her old team, she scored her first goal, contributing to a 3-0 victory. On June 28, the Flash defeated the Washington Spirit 4-0 thanks to a hat trick by Lloyd in that game. As a result of her efforts, she was later named NWSL Player of the Week.
With 10 goals, Lloyd had the third-highest goal total for the 2013 campaign.
With a regular-season record of 10-4-8 and a playoff appearance, the Flash took first place.
Both of the Flash’s game-winning goals, one in the 33rd minute and the other in stoppage time of their semifinal match against Sky Blue FC, were scored by Lloyd. Her two goals helped the Flash progress to the title game against the Portland Thorns FC with a 2-0 victory. In the championship game, the Flash were defeated 2-0.

Texas Dash (2015–2017)
On October 16, 2014, Lloyd was exchanged for Becky Edwards, Whitney Engen, and a third-round pick in the 2016 NWSL College Draft and sent to the Houston Dash.
City of Manchester (2017 loan)
For the FA WSL Spring Series, Lloyd joined Manchester City on loan in February 2017.
While Lloyd was with Manchester City, the team won the 2016–17 FA Women’s Cup and placed second in the WSL Spring Series, with her goal in the championship game.
On May 21, during Lloyd’s final game for City, she was dismissed for elbowing Annie Heatherson of Yeovil Town in the face. She was given a three-match suspension for acting violently, which lasted the rest of her loan period.
