Mookie Betts was born to Diana Benedict and Willie Betts. His father was in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Mookie’s parents have always been his biggest fans and biggest supporters. They have always encouraged him to follow his dream of becoming a professional athlete.

Early years
Betts was a junior at John Overton High School in Nashville in 2010. During that year, he hit.548 and stole 24 bases. In November of that year, Betts signed a letter of intent to go to the University of Tennessee on a baseball scholarship. Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham also tried to get him to play for them.
Betts was also a great basketball player at Overton. During his senior year, he was named MVP of the District 12-AAA league and averaged 14.1 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals per game.[8] He was also named Class AAA All-City Player of the Year for the Nashville, Tennessee area.
Betts was named the tournament’s most valuable player (MVP) when he was a junior.
Betts was also a great bowler. In 2010, with a high score of 290, he was named the Tennessee Boys Bowler of the Year. He learned to bowl at the Donelson Strike and Spare in Donelson, Tennessee, where he lived as a kid.
Work as a professional
Betts was chosen as a second baseman by the Boston Red Sox with the 172nd pick in the fifth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft. After long talks, Betts changed his mind about going to the University of Tennessee and instead signed a $750,000 deal with the Red Sox organization. Betts played for the GCL Red Sox in the rookie Gulf Coast League in 2011. He played in one game and got two hits in four at-bats. In 2012, he played for the short-season Lowell Spinners of the New YorkâPenn League. He hit.267 and stole 20 bases in 71 games. He often played shortstop, but he seemed more at ease at second base.
Betts started the 2013 season with the Low A South Atlantic League’s Greenville Drive. Betts hit.296 in 76 games and had a hit streak of 19 games. He was chosen for the South Atlantic League All-Star Game.
Betts was moved to the High A Carolina League’s Salem Red Sox on July 9. He hit.341 in 51 games there and finished the 2013 season with a.314 average in 127 games between Greenville and Salem, with 15 home runs and 38 stolen bases.
Betts was named the Boston minor league system’s Offensive Player of the Year and Breakout Player of the Year. He led all Sox minor league players with a slugging percentage of.506, and his batting average of.314 was third best, behind Alex Hassan (.338) and Garin Cecchini (.314) (.322).
Betts was picked for the Baseball America Minor League All-Star Team’s second team in 2013. Chicago White Sox infielder Marcus Semien was picked for the first team at second base. After that, Betts played 16 games for the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit.271 (out of.400) with the bat.
In 2014, Betts played for the Pawtucket Red Sox
Betts started the 2014 season with the Double-A Eastern League’s Portland Sea Dogs. He hit.355 in 54 games, which was the best in the Eastern League through June 2. Betts was moved to the Triple-A International League’s Pawtucket Red Sox on June 3. In 23 games with the PawSox, he hit.322 and got on base every time.
Betts got on base in 66 straight regular-season games and five playoff games, for a total of 71 games between 2013 and 2014. 2014 season: Rookie season
On June 28, 2014, Betts was moved up to the Red Sox. He had been picked for the All-Star Futures Game before he moved up to the Major Leagues, but he was replaced.
Betts’ first hit in the major leagues came against Yankees starter Chase Whitley in the fourth inning of his first game on June 29.
On July 2, he hit his first home run against Carlos Villanueva of the Cubs. Then, on July 19, when Shane Victorino came off the disabled list, he was sent to Triple-A Pawtucket. On August 1, he was called back to Boston. Betts was sent back to Pawtucket in August, but on August 18 he was called up again.
On August 29, Betts hit his first grand slam of his career against Rays pitcher Chris Archer at Tropicana Field, helping the Red Sox win. At 21, Betts became the youngest Red Sox player in 49 years to hit a grand slam. Betts spent most of the 2014 season in the outfield, but on September 11, manager John Farrell said that Betts would be playing second base “fairly regularly” because Dustin Pedroia and Brock Holt had been hurt.
Betts spent about the same amount of time in AA, AAA, and MLB in 2014. He played 52 games in MLB. He did well for the Red Sox, hitting.291 with five home runs, and he played center field for more than half of his innings.
