Early years

Richter was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the second of four kids. His mother, Glenda Swanson (nee Palmer), designed kitchen cabinets, and his father, Laurence R. Richter, taught Russian at Indiana University for more than 32 years. Richter grew up in the Illinois town of Yorkville. In 1984, he got his diploma from Yorkville High School, where he was named Prom King. When he was 4, his parents split up, and his father later came out as gay.

Career

Andy Richter as “Pope” of the 2015 New Orleans Mardi Gras parade “Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus.”

Richter went to the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and Columbia College Chicago in the late 1980s to study film. During his time at Columbia, he acted in and wrote for a number of student films and videos, which helped him learn the basics of comedic acting and writing. Richter worked as a production assistant on commercial sets in Chicago after he left Columbia in 1988. In 1989, he started taking classes at Improv Olympic in Chicago. In just one year, he went from being a student to a “House Performer.” Richter worked with “The Comedy Underground” and the Annoyance Theatre, which gave him more opportunities. Richter wrote for the short-lived TV show about Jonathan Brandmeier.

In the early 1990s, when producer Joey Soloway put on The Real Live Brady Bunch, which was a live, word-for-word performance of the 1970s sitcom, the theater was a big hit. The show was so well-liked that it got attention from all over the country and moved to New York City. Richter wasn’t one of the original cast members, but the actor who played “Mike Brady” in the Chicago cast decided not to go to New York. Richter asked Soloway if he could play “Mike” in New York, and Soloway said yes because he had not yet found a replacement. [needs citation]

Conan O’Brien’s Late Night Show

At the same time that The Real Live Brady Bunch was playing in New York, Beth Cahill and Melanie Hutsell, who played Marcia and Jan Brady in “The Real Live Brady Bunch,” were hired as cast members on Saturday Night Live. Richter went to after-show parties with SNL friends. That’s where he met SNL writer Robert Smigel. Two years later, Smigel hired Richter as a writer for Late Night with Conan O’Brien, a new show that he was making. During a practice run-through, when the production staff was testing lighting angles and sound, Smigel sent Richter to join Conan O’Brien on stage. He did this because he saw that the two of them got along well. A few weeks before the first show in 1993, he became O’Brien’s sidekick.

Richter left Late Night on May 26, 2000, after the show was over. He later said this about the choice: “I got tired of being on the show after seven years. I think that if you are lucky, you shouldn’t just sit there and say, “That’s fine, this is enough for me,” but you should try to get more. You should see how far your good luck can take you. And I was interested.”

When Morning Comes

Richter quit his job at Late Night in 2000 to try to become a movie and TV actor. Andy Richter Controls the Universe, which aired on Fox for two mid-season runs, was his first big project. Quintuplets, his next Fox sitcom, ran for one season. Conan O’Brien helped write and produce his TV show, Andy Barker P.I., which aired in 2007. Richter played an accountant in the show who couldn’t get clients. After a woman comes to his office thinking he is the former tenant, a private investigator, she asks him to find her husband, who she thinks faked his own death. Barker decides to take this job seriously and becomes a private investigator. He keeps doing his accounting job, which seems to get better as the show goes on. The show was on NBC, and all six episodes of the first season were posted on NBC.com. Even though Entertainment Weekly named it one of the Top Ten Shows of 2007, the show was cancelled because it didn’t do well with viewers.
