On Monday morning, a driver’s education vehicle got into an accident on Highway 218 near Janesville. The accident killed the mayor of Fairbank, Gregory Harter, and hurt three other people, including two teenagers.

Gregory Harter was a driving instructor for a program in Cedar Falls called Street Smarts at the time he died.
Gregory was in a Street Smarts car driven by a Waterloo teen who was only 14 years old.
According to the Iowa State Patrol accident report, the teen’s 2014 Chevrolet Impala was driving south on Hwy 218 around 8:30 a.m. when it crashed onto the shoulder.
The driver overcorrected, crossed the southbound lanes and the median, and went into the path of northbound traffic, hitting a 2010 Toyota Highlander driven by Tabetha Gehrke, 44, of Waterloo.
Both drivers and a teenage passenger in the Impala from Waverly were hurt and taken to hospitals in Waterloo.
The State Patrol says that the accident is still being looked into. The Janesville Fire and Police departments, the Bremer County Sheriff’s Office, Waverly Ambulance, the Iowa Department of Transportation, and the state medical examiner all went to the scene.
