Conrad Roy III commits suicide in ‘The Girl from Plainville,’ which chronicles the tragic story of his life and the potential that his girlfriend, Michelle, may have encouraged him to take his own life. The Hulu miniseries is divided into two unique timelines: one that covers the growth of Conrad and Michelle’s relationship from the time they first meet, and another that follows the events that transpire after he passes away.
Conrad appears to be in contact with another girl named Lily during the first few episodes of the show, before he meets Michelle. Things appear to be taking a serious turn, as he expresses a desire to travel to Ohio to meet her. When things don’t go as planned, Conrad’s attention is drawn to Michelle and she becomes his obsession. However, it is apparent that he is still agitated by Lily’s behaviour. Due to the fact that much of the show is based on true events, here’s what we discovered about Lily and who Conrad’s girlfriend from Ohio (as represented on the show) might actually be. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.
Who Was Conrad’s Ohio-based girlfriend, and where did she come from?
When Conrad is visiting his great-aunt in Florida, who happens to be familiar with Michelle’s grandmother, he meets Michelle for the first time on the programme. He, on the other hand, remains preoccupied, staring hopefully at his phone and sending messages on a frequent basis, to which he does not appear to be receiving a response. Conrad’s father informs him during a lunch that he will not be able to travel to Ohio to visit his “friend,” Lily, and we learn a few more details about him.
In the face of disappointment, Conrad’s father remains steadfast, stating that Lily’s father (with whom Conrad’s mother had spoken over the phone) did not approve of the teenage boy paying a visit to his daughter. In addition, it is revealed that Lily and Conrad met on the internet. In the meantime, Conrad continues to message Lily, who we now know lives in Ohio, but does not receive a response from her.
He finally receives a call from Lily’s phone, which turns out to be her father, who tells the little boy that he should refrain from phoning his daughter any more. Finally, it looks that Conrad has moved on from his preoccupation with his friend from Ohio and has turned his focus to Michelle, with whom he quickly develops a tragic bond.
According to Conrad’s demeanour, Lily appears to be the first possible girlfriend that he has met, but their friendship appears to have come to an abrupt stop. Following that, Lily’s communications are ignored because Conrad appears to have developed feelings for Michelle by that point. Despite the fact that we don’t learn much more about Lily, it is evident that Conrad’s brief engagement with her on the internet and over the phone inspires hope, which is quickly replaced by irritation when things don’t work out as planned.
Is Lily based on a real person or a fictional character?
However, it is unknown whether Lily’s character is based on a real person, though it is possible that she is. It is possible that Conrad met Lily online and that their relationship was confined to phone calls and emails, if what is presented on the episode about her is accurate (which is also prescient of how he and Michelle largely communicated soon after). It is unlikely, however, that there are too many signs of Conrad’s communications with Lily, given that he was in Florida during 2012. (or a similar real-life person on who Lily could be based).
As a result, it is still uncertain if Lily is based on a real person or not. Since the Hulu series claims to have dramatised portions of the story, it’s possible that Lily is fictitious. What matters is what happens next after Conrad meets Michelle in Florida, regardless of whether she was inspired by a real person or not. This is the subject of the episode.
