Toney began his professional career with Northampton Town, the football team of his birthplace and city. On November 13, 2012, he made his debut for the first team in a match that ended in a 3–3 tie in the FA Cup first round away at Bradford City. He came on as a substitute for Lewis Wilson at the end of regulation time, and his team went on to lose the match 4–2 in a penalty shoot-out.
