The Great British Bake Off: Syabira Yusoff

In September, a post said, “Syabira is a cardiovascular research associate who moved from Malaysia to London in 2013.” She has only been baking for five years, but her chicken rendang Cornish pasties are delicious.

The Great British Bake Off always seems to know when the best time of year is to start. Just when it seems like the world is about to fall off its axis into a pit of unimaginable despair, the Bake Off comes along with a dose of loveliness that can be used as a weapon. And it will happen again in 10 days, just when we need it the most.

As usual, Channel 4 released new biographies of the contestants before The Great British Bake Off. As usual, I’m only using this information to put the contestants in order from worst to best. Have any of these people met me? No. Have I seen them make dinner? No. Will that stop me from making a bunch of silly assumptions about them that will come back to haunt me on social media when everyone realizes I was wrong? Again, no. Here are the contestants for the 2022 Great British Bake Off, ranked from least successful to most successful.

Kevin (back row, third from right)

There are a few major red flags in Kevin’s official Bake Off biography that can’t be ignored. First, he says, “If you use the best ingredients, the presentation will take care of itself.” This is a coded way of saying, “I couldn’t decorate a cake well if you held a gun to my head.” Second, he is a good musician who can play the saxophone, flute, piano, and clarinet. This man has too many hobbies, like doing that and baking. Kevin, you have too many things going on. I liked getting to know you.

Maisam (front row, far left)

In her bio, Maisam says a lot of things that sound good: she’s a photographer, her favorite flavors are influenced by her Mediterranean roots, and she’s been baking since she was 13 years old. But that last one is my biggest problem with her. Even though she has been baking since she was 13, Maisam is still only 18. Let’s think about what that means. Maisam started baking the year that Bake Off moved to Channel 4, which is only about eight hours ago, as far as I can remember. Mel and Sue? Does she even know who they are? I don’t think Maisam will do well because I’m envious of how young she is.

Abdul (back row, second from left)

Abdul was born in Saudi Arabia to Pakistani parents and grew up there. He loves salsa dancing and admits to being a space nerd. That’s great, but his bio also says that as a child, he was often in trouble for “taking apart the electronics around the house.” I’m firmly on his parents’ side in this situation. Adbul is dangerous and careless, and he needs to be stopped in any way possible.

Dawn (back row, far right)

Dawn is a mom, a stepmom, and a grandma. But I’ve already made up my mind about Dawn based on how she looked in the Bake Off group shot. Dawn is leaning in as hard as she can to make sure she doesn’t fall. This lack of self-confidence hits me right where I live, so I have to punish her as I would myself.

Will (back row, second from right)

Are you listening Maisam? Will is 45 years old, and he has been baking since he was just two years old. Two! That means he has been baking for 43 years. Let’s think about what that means. Margaret Thatcher wasn’t even prime minister when Will started baking. Even before the space shuttle, he liked to bake. This could mean that he is so smart that his peers are jealous of him, or that he has been painfully average for Maisam’s whole life two and a half times over.

Rebs (front row, second from left)

This year, why is Rebs in the middle of the pack? Is it because she seems odd and mysterious? Is she seen as a dangerous dark horse because she is good at putting on a poker face? No, I have nothing to say about her because I can’t think of anything. She knows how to play a tin whistle. So, does that cover it?

Janusz (back row, third from left) (back row, third from left)

It’s also hard to figure out what Janusz is like. He works as an assistant to a head teacher, he owns a sausage dog and he likes using Polish ingredients in his bakes. But he also says “internet culture” is one of his passions, which I have no idea what it means. Janusz, do you just like to stare at your phone for hours in a detached state of catatonia as a desperate, fruitless attempt to escape the hell that is your life? I mean, so do I, but next time just be honest about it.

Maxy (front row, second from right)

On paper, it looks like Maxy is going to win this year’s Bake Off. She has a master’s degree in architecture and is a mother. She fixed up her whole apartment by herself and used her own art to decorate it. She was born in Sweden, which is a country that knows a lot about baking. To put it another way, the woman has everything. So why did I put her right in the middle? Simple: I don’t like her because she is better than me.

Syabira (front row, far right)

Syabira was born in Malaysia and moved to the United Kingdom nine years ago. Like Maisam, she didn’t start baking until 2017. But I’m rooting for Syabira because her bio says that she spends her evenings “playing an online World War II simulation game.” Obviously, I took this to mean that Syabira is a power-hungry megalomaniac who wants to crush her enemies into a puddle of quivering pulp, and I think the Bake Off tent could use more of that.

James (back row, far left)

I’m not going to lie, James scares me to death. In the group picture, he’s wearing a kilt and a brightly colored shirt, which means he’s a free spirit. He says that his signature style is “child-friendly horror,” which almost certainly means that he’s no more than five weeks away from giving Paul Hollywood a Victoria sponge that can barf up blood. James is a nuclear scientist by trade, which means he has the knowledge and skills to make all of his darkest ideas come true.

Carole (back row, centre)

When you looked at the group picture, Carole was the first person you saw. She’s the contestant who made you think, “What the hell happened to Brian May? “She is the reason you had a strong desire for fairground candy floss for a short time. Carole is The One With the Hair, and it seems like she is very happy about that. She works at a grocery store. She often does a segment on local radio called “Compost Carole.” Clearly, the woman has personality. But will it help her get a lucrative job as a TV host after she wins, or is it the kind of personality that will fall apart at the first sign of stress? I’d bet on the first option.

Sandro (front row, centre)

Internet, meet your new boyfriend. The bio for Sandro sounds like it was written by a horny fifty-something man for a Mills and Boon book. He fights. He can dance. He and his mother left war-torn Angola when he was a child. He started baking to help him get over the loss of his father, and now he teaches kids with autism how to bake online. He works as a babysitter right now. This year, Sandro is going to win Bake Off, unless Paul Hollywood kills him in a fit of jealousy during Biscuit Week.
