A press release from the Academy of Country Music (ACM) says that a native of Carlsbad will be one of this year’s winners of the “Poet’s Award.”
On August 24 in Nashville, Sonny Throckmorton will be added to the small group. Shania Twain, of all people, will join him this year. The Poet’s Award is given to a Country Music songwriter for their outstanding and long-lasting musical and/or lyrical contributions over the course of their career, with special attention paid to the impact of a song or songs on Country Music culture. It is one of the most prestigious awards from the ACM.
Between 1976 and 1980, almost every week one of Sonny Throckmorton’s songs was on the charts. During his long career, artists like Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson, The Judds, George Strait, Tanya Tucker, and many more recorded more than 1,000 of Throckmorton’s songs. The Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame made Throckmorton a member in 1985. He is also in the Hall of Fame for Carlsbad.

This year, Sonny and the Orange Beach Band will play at the Beach Bandshell on July 3 and 4 as part of our “Liberty and Legacy” Independence Day celebration. On July 3, Sonny and his group will be our main act. They will play from 7:15 to 9 p.m., right before our boat parade. People in this town are proud of the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens State Park. On Wednesday, Chevron gave a donation to the park, so the park held a ceremony to cut a ribbon and thank them. With these funds, the park got a lot of improvements, including a major update to the trail that goes through the park.

The Living Desert is not just a state park; it is so much more than that. It is a safe place for animals that could not live on their own in the wild. It is a place where families, both from out of town and from Carlsbad, can learn to love the wildlife that lives in our area.
The Living Desert also has a lot of educational events throughout the year, which are made possible by a great group of volunteers. So many kids in Carlsbad and other towns know about Maggie the Bear, the prairie dogs, and the wolves at the Living Desert, and they grow up wanting to protect these animals for the rest of their lives.

Carlsbad is about to have another busy weekend. The Car-A-Fair starts on Friday, and Encanto will play at the Halagueo Arts Park on Friday night. Saturday is the whole day of the car show. It starts at 7 a.m. with a fun run and at 10 a.m. with a cornhole tournament. Both of these events are for the LifeHouse program in Carlsbad. Also, a reminder that our summer concert series starts on June 4 with LastChild at the Water Park Gazebo.
Throckmorton first moved to Nashville in 1964. His first Top 10 song, “How Long Has It Been,” was taken to #6 on the Billboard country chart by Bobby Lewis in 1966. Over the next 10 years, he gave songs to artists who weren’t very well known. The Throckmorton song “Knee Deep in Loving You” was covered by more than a dozen artists before Dave & Sugar’s version became a big hit in 1977. This was the same year that Jerry Lee Lewis had a hit with “Middle Age Crazy” and Merle Haggard had a hit with “If We’re Not Back in Love by Monday.” He told Self, “All of a sudden, I couldn’t write them fast enough.” “It was just crazy for a while there.”
Throckmorton ruled the charts for the next 10 years, with songs like “The Last Cheater’s Waltz” by T. G. Sheppard, “Trying to Love Two Women” by the Oak Ridge Boys, “I Feel Like Loving You Again” by Sheppard, and “Why Not Me,” which was named Song of the Year by the Academy of Country Music in 1984. (the Judds). Even the songs on his albums were big moneymakers. Kenny Rogers’ version of “A Little More Like Me” was on The Gambler, which sold five million copies. George Burns had a Top 20 country hit with “I Wish I Was Eighteen Again,” which was written by Throckmorton. Burns is not a typical country singer. Throckmorton has also made music for the labels Starcrest, Mercury, and MCA. He moved back to Texas at the end of the 1980s and has lived there ever since.
