Ethan Hawke talked about director Peter Weir’s work as a director in a recent interview with IndieWire.
Hawke talked about a possible reason why Weir hasn’t worked since The Way Back came out in 2010 while promoting his docuseries The Last Movie Stars.
Hawke, who was in Weir’s Dead Poets Society, which came out in 1989, said that stars like Johnny Depp and Russell Crowe could be to blame for the Australian director’s 12-year break from directing.
The 51-year-old from Texas also said that he doesn’t think he and Weir will work together on a future project because Weir hasn’t been working in the industry for a long time. Weir and Hawke have only worked together on one film, Dead Poets Society, which won an Oscar and gave Hawke his first big break in Hollywood.
This news comes on the heels of the announcement that Weir is up for an Honorary Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He will get the award in November of this year. It will be his first Oscar, even though he has been nominated six times.

Since he started in the business in 1967, Peter Weir has only worked on 30 projects. Weir has been nominated for more than six Oscars over the course of his 40-year career. As we’ve already said, the director who is no longer working will get his Honorary Oscar in November 2022.
He has also been nominated four times for a Golden Globe award. The British Film Institute says that Weir was one of the first people to start making movies during the Australian New Wave.

During an interview with Eric Kohn of IndieWire, Ethan Hawke was asked why Peter Weir hadn’t made a movie since 2010’s The Way Back. Hawke said:
“I think he no longer cares about movies. When actors didn’t bother him, he really liked doing that work. He was broken by Russell Crowe and Johnny Depp. He’s a well-known artist, which is so rare these days. He makes artistic movies that are popular with most people.”
Hawke’s comment could have been about some problems between Russell Crowe and Johnny Depp, who either worked with Weir or were in talks to do so.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, an Australian movie that won an Oscar in 2003, starred Crowe. Even though no one knows exactly what happened during the making of the movie, Crowe’s answer from early 2021 made it sound like he and Weir don’t have anything against each other. But neither of them ever said that the controversy was true to begin with.
Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts was supposed to be turned into a movie by Peter Weir with Johnny Depp in the lead role. But in June 2006, it was said that the Sydney native had left the project because she didn’t agree with how it was being made.
