Who is Katherine Oppenheimer aka Kitty? Exploring the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s wife ahead of his biopic by Christopher Nolan

On July 21, 2023, a movie will come out about the theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his wife Katherine Oppenheimer, also known as “Kitty.” Christopher Nolan, who has won an Academy Award, will be in charge of the project, which takes place during World War II.

The story is based on “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” a biography by Martin Sherwin and Kai Bird that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2006. Both authors are listed as the movie’s writers, but Nolan is listed as the screenwriter. In the first half of 2022, the movie was shot.

A look at the life and works of German-American botanist Katherine Oppenheimer
Katherine Oppenheimer, who is married to J. Robert Oppenheimer, is a big part of the movie by Christopher Nolan. “Kitty” was a botanist and had a Bachelor’s degree in Botany from the University of Pennsylvania. She moved to the United States when she was just three years old, in 1913.

The Atomic Heritage Foundation says that Katherine worked as a technician at the Los Alamos lab for a year but then quit. Even though she didn’t go back to her job, she did host a lot of cocktail parties for women to help them forget about how stressful life was in Los Alamos.

Katherine Oppenheimer and her husband, J. Robert Oppenheimer, were very close to each other and depended on each other a lot. The Atomic Heritage Foundation says that when things went wrong with the Manhattan Project, Robert Oppenheimer asked his wife for advice too often.

The Oppenheimers raised their two children, Peter and Tony, in Los Alamos. After World War II, though, the family moved to Princeton, New Jersey.

During their security hearings in 1954, Robert and Katherine both had to swear to the Atomic Energy Commission that they were loyal to the United States. But soon after, they lost their security clearance, which ended Robert Oppenheimer’s work for the government.

After Robert died of throat cancer, his wife Katherine scattered his ashes on a beach near their home in St. John. This beach is now called “Oppenheimer Beach.” She moved in with Robert Serber, a long-time family friend, and the two of them went on a trip around the world by boat. She died on the trip because of a blood clot in her lungs.
