According to the Los Angeles Times, she married Peter Gross, a businessman from Beverly Hills, in 1924. Soon after their honeymoon, Gross’s ex-housekeeper and lover sued him for breaking his promise and asked for $150,000.
In the same report, it was shown that Gross shot himself in the head and left a note that said, “Death is a treat.” His death made Hersee very wealthy. At the same time, George Campbell Carson, a prospector and inventor, was nearing the end of a huge 19-year court battle with mining companies over a patent infringement. He is said to have won $20 million.
They met, got married, and then started to buy old things. Hersee Moody Carson hired 100 people in 1932 to help her build her castle. It cost $500,000 to build, which is equivalent to about $10,500,000 today.
