The beginnings
Tebow was born to American parents in the Philippines. Pamela Elaine (née Pemberton) and Robert Ramsey Tebow II met at the University of Florida in the late 1960s, where they both went to school. At that time, both his mother and father were in their first year of college. Before Pamela graduated from college, the couple got married on June 12, 1971. In 1985, the family moved to the Philippines, where they worked as Baptist missionaries and built a ministry. During the time the Tebows were there, Pamela got amoebic dysentery and went into a coma. While she was getting better, she found out she was pregnant. The medicines Pamela took to get better caused a serious problem with her placenta. Doctors thought the baby would die at birth and suggested an abortion, which was against the law in the Philippines even in very serious cases. The Tebows chose not to do it. Tim Tebow was born in Manila on August 14, 1987, to Pamela Tebow. Tim’s family moved from the Philippines to Jacksonville, Florida, when he was three years old.
Tebow is the fifth and last child. He is a Walloon from Belgium. In the 1680s, Andries Tebow set sail from Bruges for America. His parents taught him and his siblings at home. They also taught the family to be Christian. Tebow has trouble reading and writing, but he thinks this is a gift from God. He started playing football in high school as a tight end for Jacksonville’s Trinity Christian Academy. Before the 2003 season, he moved to the nearby county of St. Johns, which made him eligible to play quarterback for the struggling football team at Allen D. Nease High School. He never went to either school, though, because his parents chose to teach him at home. Homeschooled students in Florida can play on the high school team in the school district where they live. Private schools like Trinity Christian Academy can also let homeschooled students play on their teams.
As a junior at Nease, Tebow became known across the country for his ability to run and throw, as well as his fierce competitiveness. He hurt his right leg late in the first half of a game later that same year. At first, people thought he had a bad cramp, but it turned out he had a broken fibula. He played the whole second half, and at one point he ran for a 29-yard touchdown. After the game, it was clear how bad the injury was, so he couldn’t play for the rest of his junior season. Still, he was named Player of the Year in Florida and became a big college football quarterback prospect.
During his senior year, he led the Nease Panthers to a state championship. He was named All-State, Florida’s Mr. Football, a Parade magazine high school All-American, and Player of the Year in Florida for the second time. He played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, which had 78 of the best senior high school football players from all over the country and was shown on NBC across the country.
An ESPN Faces in Sports documentary was about Tebow. The segment was called “Tim Tebow: The Chosen One,” and it was mostly about the controversy over Tebow’s home schooling and missionary work in the Philippines, as well as his athletic achievements and the process of getting recruited by colleges. Tebow was also on the “Faces in the Crowd” page of Sports Illustrated. In 2007, he was named to the Florida State Athletic Association’s All-Century Team, which was made up of the top 33 high school football players in Florida over the past 100 years. Homeschooling

People often think that home-schooled kids aren’t very athletic. They say things like, “Go win a spelling bee or something.” It’s an honor to be the first home-schooled kid to do something like that.” Tebow won the Quaqua Protégé Award in 2008 for being the best home-school graduate.
A career in college football
Tebow went to the University of Florida on a football scholarship and played for coach Urban Meyer’s Florida Gators from 2006 to 2009. Even though he was a backup in his first year at Florida, he went on to win the Heisman Trophy in 2007, lead the team to a BCS championship in 2008, and have a 13–1 season in 2009. In 2008 and 2009, the Gators’ coaches chose him to be the team captain. In 2007, 2008, and 2009, his teammates chose him as the Gators’ most valuable player, making him the only player to win this award three times.
Even though Tebow played well in his first practice with the other teams, head coach Urban Meyer put him in the second string behind Chris Leak. Even though he was a backup for most of the season, Tebow was a big part of the Gators’ success in 2006. He played his first game in college against Southern Miss. He came off the bench when the game was on the goal line. On his first play, he ran for a touchdown after the quarterback made a planned mistake. In the next game, against UCF, he led the team in yards gained by running.
Tebow’s best game of the season was on October 7 against the LSU Tigers. He scored all three touchdowns for the Gators, two by passing and one by running. Tebow helped the Gators beat Ohio State in the BCS National Championship Game in 2007. He threw one touchdown pass and ran for another, giving him 39 yards on the ground. He had the second-most yards rushing for the Gators in 2006.
