Early years
Carey was one of five children raised by Kevin and Lynne in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. When Carey was six, his mother and father split up. His mother took four of the children to Adelaide and lived in a homeless shelter with them. Carey’s autobiography says that his father was a violent alcoholic who had spent time in Mannus Correctional Centre. A few months later, Kevin Carey got the kids back from his ex-wife, and the whole family moved back to Wagga Wagga.
Carey played Australian rules football when he was eight years old and rugby league when he was younger. Carey moved back to Adelaide when he was 13. He went to The Heights School and played youth football for North Adelaide.
Career as a player: 1989–2004
In 1987, North Melbourne hired Carey after their CEO, Greg Miller, met with the football department of the Sydney Swans to talk about transferring a well-liked junior key position player, John Longmire, to North Melbourne. Once that deal was done, Miller asked about Carey, who, like Longmire, was zoned to the Swans because he had lived in New South Wales. He made a small transfer fee offer of $10,000, which the Swans surprisingly accepted. Carey moved to Melbourne when he was 16 and played for the North Melbourne under-19s. He was a star on the team that won the 1988 premiership under coach Denis Pagan. Carey was moved up to the senior list before the 1989 season. After his left shoulder dislocated in a practice match early in the year, he played his first game for the seniors against Fitzroy in round 11 of 1989, when he was 18 years old.

Carey’s time in State of Origin was short but successful, and he says it was an important time in his career. Carey first played at the highest level of the game in 1990 for New South Wales. 1989–2001

Carey won the first of four best and fairest awards for North Melbourne in 1992. The next year, he was named captain.
“Carey’s presence and contributions were a big reason why North became one of the AFL’s power clubs in the middle to late 1990s. It’s possible that no football player in history has ever won a game on his own, but Carey, at his best, may have come as close as anyone. From an objective point of view, he was probably worth at least three players, which is also the number of opponents he sometimes had to face. Carey was chosen as captain of the team four times and was named an AFL All-Australian in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000. He was a key player on his club’s two most recent premiership teams, in 1996 and 1999.
A relationship outside of marriage and moving from North Melbourne to Adelaide: 2002–2004
In March 2002, Carey had an affair with Kelli Stevens, who was married to North Melbourne team member and Vice Captain Anthony Stevens. Carey was married to his long-term partner Sally McMahon, which made the situation even messier. Carey and Stevens went to a party at Glenn Archer’s house, who is also on their team. Carey is said to have said that Kelli followed him into the bathroom in front of many people, including her husband. Carey and Stevens got into a fight, and after that, neither of them showed up to football practice. Carey quit North Melbourne in shame after his whole team turned against him and he was criticized all over the country. AFL Hall of Famer and North Melbourne champion Brent Harvey said that it set the team back “four or five years.” Carey missed the 2002 AFL season and moved to the Adelaide Crows for the 2003 AFL season. He played two seasons with the Crows, during which he kicked 56 goals, before retiring at the end of the 2004 AFL season. In 2003, the first game between North Melbourne and Adelaide was exciting to watch because both Archer and Stevens teased Carey and tried to hurt him. Even though the tension was high, no one did anything hasty. Adelaide went on to win by 54 points, which was a clear victory. In 2004, Stevens replaced Carey as captain. In February 2022, 20 years after the first fallout from the affair, Carey said on season three of the reality TV show SAS Australia that his affair with Stevens was “the biggest regret of my life as an adult.” Even though Carey dropped out of the show, she was still paid A$250,000 for the appearance.
In August 2022, Carey and Stevens met again at a party to celebrate the 26th anniversary of their 1996 premiership, which was supposed to be the 25th anniversary but was delayed by a year because of COVID-19. Carey and Stevens got into a “verbal stoush” at the party, but the situation was said to have calmed down. The Herald Sun said that there was no chance of violence and that the two “went their separate ways and had a beer together” afterward.
