The squad’s current biggest problem is to prevent the dissolution of their team. The entire team has put a lot of effort into creating the greatest presentation possible to persuade the executives that their team can generate revenue. The CEO of NEON has acknowledged that Jang Man-cheol taught her what effective leadership is and that she has always had faith in him.

In a meeting with the executives, Man-cheol presents the plan for the webtoon team’s future endeavors. They intend to launch an affiliate firm with Artist Na and Seok Ji-hyung serving as Co-CEOs, he says by pulling out his concealed card. The executives are persuaded by the presentation, and they opt to maintain the current team in place rather than taking over YoungToon. Given that he had pledged the takeover to the CEO of YoungToon, this could be problematic for director Heo.

What Is Webtoon?

Naver Corporation introduced the South Korean webtoon platform known as Webtoon in 2004. It is, as its name implies, a venue for South Korean webtoons, little digital comics.

As the Naver brand is not well known outside of Korea and certain of its features are not offered there, the platform was first introduced in Korea as Naver Webtoon and then globally as Line Webtoon in July 2014. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, the service experienced significant growth. 2016 saw the launch of Naver’s webtoon service in both China and Japan under the names Dongman Manhua and XOY, respectively. On December 18, 2018, Naver shut down XOY and moved all of its original and translated webcomics to Line Manga, their licensed manga service. English-language versions of Line Webtoon and their Spanish and French counterparts were released in 2019.

In addition to hosting a variety of other series on its self-publishing website CANVAS, the platform collaborates with creators to publish original material under the Webtoon Originals label.

Comics from Line Webtoon can be found using the “daily system” feature, read online, and downloaded for free on desktops, iOS, and Android devices.

In order to license English-language content, Webtoon created a new company called Webtoon Studios in November 2020. Wattpad Webtoon Studios reportedly stated in August 2022 that they will grow by adding a new animation branch.

History of Webtoon

After seeing the collapse of the manhwa industry in the late 1990s and early 2000s, JunKoo Kim launched Webtoon in 2004 under the moniker “Webtoon”. Kim, who grew up reading superhero manhwa and Japanese comics, was seeking for a way to have new comics produced after discovering that there weren’t many new comics being released. Kim proposed that because people were accustomed to scrolling through web pages, tall, scrollable comics would be successful online. Kim originally struggled to get artists to make webtoons for his service because of this strange layout, but he discovered that manhwa were open to trying something new due to the dire status of the local manhwa business. Both businesses began cooperating under Naver Corporation’s content division following Wattpad’s purchase by Naver Corporation in early 2021.

Webtoon’s Worldwide Launch

International artists can now upload their own works to the service thanks to the launch of the Line Webtoon website and mobile application on July 2, 2014, around the globe. There are hundreds of webcomic titles available in Webtoon’s self-publishing sector, called CANVAS, where creators can get paid based on page views. 42 webtoons, including Noblesse, Tower of God, and The God of High School, as well as a brand-new webtoon created by an American artist, were chosen by Naver Corporation to be made available on the service in English at launch. As seven to ten webtoons were updated every day and covered a range of genres, 148 Apps claims that the service delivered “enough of content” at debut.

Partnerships of Webtoon

Naver Webtoon established a Profit Page Share scheme in April 2013. This compensation model, which is split between NHN Corp and the artists themselves, enables artists to generate greater profits through adverts or their own online shops.

For the purpose of promoting their service in 2015, Line Webtoon teamed together with American comics legend Stan Lee, co-founder of Image Comics Marc Silvestri, and make-up artist Michelle Phan.

Silvestri introduced the platform to his venerable comic book series Cyberforce.

Along the way, a number of other well-known American comic book creators and cartoonists have also collaborated with Line Webtoon, including Tracy J. Butler, Dean Haspiel, Katie Cook, Seth Kushner, and Shamus Beyale (Lackadaisy).

Line Webtoon collaborated with the crowdsourcing platform Patreon in September 2016, adding a “Patreon button” to the website’s “Discover” section. This feature makes it simpler for readers and artists to communicate with one another. When webtoon creators reached a particular level of engagement and fame with a Patreon page, Naver invested US$3.6 million and $1,000 per month after that. Naver joined the Creative Artists Agency a month later to pursue American film and television prospects.

In the second half of 2016, Line Webtoon also collaborated with DeviantArt through the “Artist Alley Tour.” Four Comic Cons—Boston Comic Con, Baltimore Comic Con, Rose City Comic Con, and New York Comic Con—saw activity from the companies. Discussion panels, “Artist Alley Sponsorships,” live drawing events, influencer and creator demonstration zones, and on-site competitions were all conducted here by Line Webtoon and DeviantArt.

John Barrowman’s Acursian and season 2 of Firebrand were added to the collaboration between Line Webtoon and Legendary Comics in 2017.

2018 saw collaborations for the new Caster series with Noble Transmission and Common.

The South Korean boy band BTS’s output is the focus of Big Hit Entertainment’s BTS Universe (BU), which was created by the latter in collaboration with Webtoon’s digital content subsidiary LICO to create the 2019 release Save Me.

The agreement between Crunchyroll and Line Webtoon to create animated versions of the latter’s library was announced on October 15, 2019. Together, the two will take over the distribution, licensing, and retail of the partnership-produced series.

The transfer of Webtoon to Naver Webtoon Corp. was announced for May 2020.

Naver, the parent firm of Webtoon, purchased the well-known user-written story platform Wattpad on January 19, 2021. To provide creators more possibilities, Wattpad will work with Webtoon, as it did with its 2020 Watty Awards Contest.

Wattpad and Webtoon announced in June 2021 that their studio divisions would combine to form Wattpad Webtoon Studios.

A partnership between Webtoon and DC Entertainment was announced in August 2021 to produce stand-alone webcomics that “would appeal to all fans, without the need to know or read any past storylines.”

UserBase of Webtoon

After the service went global, Webtoon’s user base quickly expanded, reaching 10 million daily readers and 35 million monthly readers.
A number of webcomics in Asia receive 5 million views per week. In 2016, 50% of Line Webtoon’s 6 million daily active users and 42% of its webtoon creators were female. In North America, 64% of users are female and 75% are under 24.

Webtoon now receives more than 100 billion views annually as of July 1, 2019.

Contests of Webtoon

Through its Webtoon service, Naver Corporation has conducted numerous comics competitions. In 2015, Line introduced the “Challenge League,” a recurring contest where aspiring cartoonists can earn tens of thousands of dollars in addition to the possibility to become “official Line webtoon artists.” The first English-language Challenge League, which was won by Stephen McCranie’s Space Boy, attracted more than 19,000 participants. There were additional local challenge weeks, and the first Thai challenge league offered a 1 million baht grand prize in April 2015.

The Science Fiction Comics Contest, a global contest with a top prize of US$30,000, was held in June 2015 by Naver Corporation. “Both the largest and fastest-growing sector in comics and entertainment, [and so] a perfect choice as the genre for our second comics contest,” said JunKoo Kim of the competition’s theme of science fiction. Over 800 people entered this competition, which Srinitybeast’s Overdrive won.

Webtoon held its Discover Creator Contest in November 2018. The winning entry, Cape of Spirits by Kris Nguyen, was awarded an exclusive contract for the series and a total of US$80,000.

“The Short Story Contest” was announced on February 28, 2020. The tournament, which ran from April 30 to June 30, had two divisions: “Heart” and “Brain.” The Monster Under My Bed by Marvin W. for “Heart” and Kotopopi’s The Ladder for “Brain” were the succeeding winners, each receiving US$15,000, an animated short, and a featured contract. The HEART Anthology, which was published in September 2020, and the BRAIN Anthology, which was published in October 2020, both featured the grand prize, silver, and bronze contest winners.

Nine titles were chosen and pitched to readers as part of Webtoon’s Webtoon GREENLiGHT interactive contest series, which ran from April 2020 to July 2020. The readers then decided which series will be “greenlit” as a new Original series by enjoying the episodes of the series. To be “greenlit” for publication, each series had to acquire a record number of 60,000 likes on its third episode within a week. All nine successful series are slated for publication in 2021.

The winner of the Call to Action contest, which Webtoon announced in the summer of 2022, would get US$50,000 in addition to the opportunity to be a Webtoon original.

The Webtoon team is ecstatic when Man-cheol announces that Seok Ji-hyung would no longer serve as the deputy editor but rather as the CEO of a company during the team dinner. While they are thrilled for his achievement, the team is sad to see him go. The crew also receives the excellent news that Ma-eum is now a full-time employee rather than a contract worker. Seok Ji-hyung and On Ma-eum both remained with the team despite having the option to do so, and as a result, both of them achieved success. Director Heo is currently in difficulty because to Jun-yeong. He has been told by the CEO to resign or risk being found out.

The webtoon team’s commitment, hard work, and loyalty are evident in today’s Webtoon Episode 15. The webtoon crew is a great illustration of teamwork. Despite being the devil, director Heo chose the incorrect person, which caused everything to turn against him. A strong team with a mutually trustworthy relationship is challenging to disband.
