Eventually, Seppala ran into Ivanov, and as a result, he was able to continue on to Nome the following day. A high-risk attempt is made by Seppala and his team to save time and reduce the strain placed on the dogs by taking a dangerous shortcut across the breaking ice in the Norton Sound. As a result of the team becoming stranded on a broken piece of ice close to the shore, he is forced to throw Togo to the shore, where the dog then pulls the entire broken piece of ice to safety.
Togo is worn out from the effort, as well as the subsequent run through the driving storm that follows.
