‘Squid Game’: Return of key characters for Season 2, creator confirms

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of ‘Squid Game,’ disclosed the return of two crucial characters while speaking at the Contenders Television event at Paramount Studios.

Hwang Dong-hyuk has been around for quite some time, but it was the film ‘Squid Game’ that catapulted him to international prominence. The survival drama, which was inspired by his own life and economic troubles, focused around a contest in which people in extreme financial straits, 456 of them to be exact, competed in a series of children’s games for a chance to win a cash prize of $38 million. There is, however, a catch to this strategy. If a person loses at any moment in the game, he or she pays with their life.

This South Korean television series, which was in many ways a commentary on the divide between rich and poor in the country, received widespread international attention, eventually surpassing ‘Bridgerton’ to become the most-watched show on Netflix. With a cast led by Lee Jung-jae, ‘Squid Game’ became the first Korean drama to debut in the top ten of Netflix’s most-watched series on a weekly basis around the world. The possibility of a second season began to circulate around October 2021, and it was confirmed a month later by Dong-hyuk, who, however, did not have any specifics concerning the return of Jung-jae or any other stars.

Dong-hyuk stated that two significant characters would be returning to the show for the first time, breaking his silence on the subject for the first time during the Deadline Contenders Television. “Gi-hun, without a doubt. He’ll be returning, and I believe the Front Man will be back as well, so stay tuned “Dong-hyuk said himself. Despite the fact that the characters’ comeback was widely anticipated, this is the first time the inventor of the ‘Squid Game’ has publicly acknowledged it. He had also teased the return of HoYeon Jung, a North Korean refugee competitor, a couple of weeks ago, implying that she would return as her “evil twin sister,” a reference to her appearance on the show as her “evil twin sister.”

Hwang Dong-hyuk went on to discuss his goals for the show, which he believes would help to break down the language barrier. “My goal is that a piece of work like ‘Squid Game’ has in some small way pried open the door. I hope that the piece is given a chance by the American public, and that you will read the subtitles and watch without dubbing. We’re hopeful that we can provide that opportunity “Dong-hyuk said himself.

Season 2 of the ‘Squid Game’ is slated to premiere in 2024 on Netflix.
