How does a lawyer from the UK end up making movies in Hollywood?

I became an attorney in California, and for many years I worked in the media and technology fields in Los Angeles. I wanted to broaden my horizons at some point, and since I had worked with many film producers, financiers, distributors, etc. as a consultant, I wanted to be a producer.

Where did the idea to make a movie about Shirley Jackson come from?

The script comes first every time. At LAMF, we have a team of creative people who look over 30–50 scripts every month. Let’s say we get at least 350 scripts a year. Out of those, we make 3 or 4 movies a year and buy the rights to a few more to develop. So, less than 3% of the projects we look at in a given year get us involved. Shirley, written by Sarah Gubbins and based on a book by Susan Scarf Merrell with the same name, was one of those scripts that stood out for how rich and complicated it was. The script made me think of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf, a play by Edward Albee that was turned into a movie with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Elisabeth Moss said that the script for Shirley was the best one she’d ever read.
