Based on Gregory David Roberts’ 936-page tome, Shantaram is only mildly engaging if you get past the film’s bizarre accents, incorrect settings, lurching storyline, and white saviour clichés (which is asking a lot), but it is still worth watching. Shantaram is a film in 1980s Bombay and recounts the narrative of Dale, a heroin addict and bank robber played by Charlie Hunnam. Dale flees to Bombay from Pentridge Prison in Victoria, Australia, where he is brutally tortured and beaten.

Characters played by Charlie Hunnam, Fayssal Bazzi, Sujaya Dasgupta, Antonia Desplat, Elham Ehsas, David Field, Matthew Joseph, Rachel Kamath, Alyy Khan, Elektra Kilbey, Shiv Palekar, Luke Pasqualino, Vincent Perez, Shubham Saraf, Gabrielle Scharnitzky, and Alexander Siddig are featured in the film.
The plot follows an escaped convict who travels to India hoping to start over and, among other things, find love.
What was supposed to be a brief stopover turns out to be an extended stay during which Dale assumes the identities of Lin-baba, Dr. Lin, and, ultimately, Shantaram. The name Lindsey Ford appears on the fake passport that Dale uses. In the same way, as any other large and bustling city does, Bombay gives Lin access to a wide variety of shady ladies and black knights.
Lin encounters the prototypical con artist in the form of Prabhu, the tour guide, as soon as she steps off the van (Shubham Saraf). At the time of the events described in the novel, Reyanaldo’s Café played the role of the legendary Leopold Café. There is the femme fatale Karla (Antonia Desplat), who Lin quickly falls for, her partner Didier (Vincent Perez), the beautiful American junkie and lady of the night Lisa (Elektra Kilbey), her pimps Modena (Elham Ehsas) and Maurizio (Luke Pasqualino), a stuntman named Vikram (Shiv Palekar) who has a weakness for spaghetti westerns.
Rapscallions from all over the world are a part of the underworld, including Abdel Khader Khan (played by Alexander Siddig), his bitter rival Walid Shah (Mel Odedra), and his servant Abdullah Taheri (Fayssal Bazzi). There is the vicious Madame Zhou, played by Gabrielle Scharnitzky, who is in charge of the Palace, a sprawling brothel with a high-end clientele.
Ravi (Matthew Joseph), a boy whose mother is killed in a fire Lin blames himself for, the respected and respectful headman Qasim Ali (Alyy Khan), and Parvati (Rachel Kamath), who works at a tea stall and is Prabhu’s love interest in one of the sweeter subplots of the show, are some of the good people who live in the slum.
The accents are peculiar, from Charlie Hunnam’s sporadic use of an Australian accent to the inability of any of the Mumbaikars to accurately pronounce the name of their slum, Sagar Wada. Oh, how we have been waiting for “Mandwa” by Vijay Dinanath Chouhan!
Shantaram Season 1 Episode9: Ending Explained
The third episode of “Shantaram” begins with flames of fire devouring the slum and the people who live there. Because of how quickly it began to spread, Laxmi, a female resident of the slum, was involved in an accident that left her with serious injuries. Lin, who had previous experience in emergency medical services, immediately began providing medical care to the injured residents of the slum to the best of his skills. Lin received appreciation from Qasim, who is believed to be the boss of the slum, for assisting the injured people of the slum. Laxmi, however, could not be rescued due to the absence of a hospital, necessary medications, equipment, and a skilled medical professional. As a result, Lin was compelled to blame himself for his wife’s passing.
During this time, Khader Khan came face to face with his most formidable adversary, Walid Shah. It looked like Walid Shah was a more powerful person in the criminal underground than Khan. Their conversation gave the impression that they were contending with one another over ownership of a location known as Sagar Wada. Khader also got in touch with the brothel owner, Zhou, who backed Ruzul in his arrangement with Walid Shah in the brothel she owned, known as “Palace.” Zhou gave the impression of loyalty to Khader, yet she maintained her identity. She looked Khader straight in the eyes and spoke with self-assurance.
Khader refrained from killing her because he knew there was another potential use for her. Lin maintained his practice of offering medical care to the residents of the slum while this was going on. Lin unwillingly accepted Prabhu’s offer to work as a doctor for the people living in the slum, which obliged Lin to accept the offer. The reason why Lin was detained was revealed to us in the flashback. He was involved in a battle with a law enforcement officer while he and Charlie fled the scene of a bank heist. During the struggle, Lin’s gun accidentally went off, ultimately leading to the officer’s death. Lin could not abandon the dying guy in his current condition, which led to his capture by the authorities.

Charlie Hunnam has been cast in the role of Lin Ford in Shantaram.
Charlie Hunnam portrays the role of jail fugitive Lin Ford, attempting to remain anonymous in 1980s Bombay. Hunnam is the film’s leading man.
Hunnam, 42 years old, adds that the book is “a brilliantly written work that exposed me to a world that I’d never seen before.” “It’s this epic, sprawling, and tremendously beautiful love story, but it’s also a narrative about great adventure and find out more about oneself at the same time. Lin finds himself in India on this quest of spiritual awakening at the same time that he is being drawn deeper into the realms of organized crime.”
“The book was a gift from a friend, and it just so happened that I was leaving for Thailand the next day. I decided to bring it with me, which turned out to be fantastic for me but not so fantastic for my partner because there are 936 pages in the book. After tearing through it, I turned around and asked my close friend, a writer and producer, “Can we make this?”
However, Charlie Hunnam made his breakthrough on British television in 1999 when, as a teenager, he starred as love-smitten Nathan Maloney in Channel 4’s original Queer As Folk series. Although he is best known for his role as Jackson “Jax” Teller on the American biker drama Sons of Anarchy, Hunnam did make his breakthrough on British television. The actor, born in Newcastle and now 42 years old, was previously seen in the BBC adolescent drama Byker Grove.

Shantaram Season 1: Release Date
On Friday, October 14, 2022, the first three episodes of the drama series Shantaram will premiere worldwide on Apple TV+. The series will have a total of 12 episodes. After this, one new episode will be released each week, beginning on Fridays until December 16, 2022.
