The beginnings
Saturday was born in the Georgia city of Atlanta.
In 1993, he went to high school at Shamrock in Decatur, Georgia.
In a 2012 article in Sports Illustrated, his high school coach Ron Gartrell said, “Jeff was in charge of 80% of our offense. On defense, we put Jeff on one side and all of our other good players on the other side, because teams tried to avoid Jeff.” Gartrell tried to sell Saturday’s skills to schools in the Southeastern Conference, but he couldn’t. Sports Illustrated said that Saturday was the 11th best center in the 1998 NFL Draft. He was called “a bit of an overachiever who has worked to get better,” but he was also called “a small guy who has trouble competing with big, strong NTs who can beat him.” He went undrafted. On April 27, 1998, the Baltimore Ravens signed him as a free agent, but they let him go on June 12, 1998. He went back to Raleigh, North Carolina, and got a job as a manager at an electrical supply store.
