Jeffrey, a defensive back and wide receiver with four years of experience, led his team to the playoffs for the first time as a sophomore and to a win in the playoffs for the first time as a senior.

He was named to the all-region team twice and ended his career with 79 tackles, six interceptions, 100 catches for 1,502 yards, and 17 touchdowns.

As a senior, he caught 55 passes for 1,035 yards and 13 touchdowns. For this, he was named to the first team of all-state, all-county, and team MVP.

In addition, he had 34 defensive tackles. He was hurt in his back for most of his junior year. As a sophomore, the team’s offensive MVP made 34 catches for 349 yards and scored four touchdowns.

Jeffrey also did track and field as a sophomore and played basketball for three years with Kevin Shaeffer and Jeff Saturday as his coaches. The North Carolina Tar Heels use him as a wide receiver.

This season, Jeff’s son is one of thirteen Georgians playing for North Carolina. He missed most of his junior year because of a back injury, but it doesn’t seem to have hurt his confidence. If anything, it seems to have helped him get stronger.

Savannah Faith Saturday, the daughter of ex-football player Jeff Saturday, will get her degree from the University of Alabama on May 20, 2021.

The beginnings

Saturday was born in the Georgia city of Atlanta.

In 1993, he went to high school at Shamrock in Decatur, Georgia.

In a 2012 article in Sports Illustrated, his high school coach Ron Gartrell said, “Jeff was in charge of 80% of our offense. On defense, we put Jeff on one side and all of our other good players on the other side, because teams tried to avoid Jeff.” Gartrell tried to sell Saturday’s skills to schools in the Southeastern Conference, but he couldn’t. In the same interview, he said that coaches at Georgia and Tennessee thought Saturday was too short to play in the conference. He got a scholarship offer from the University of North Carolina, in part because Gartrell was friends with Carl Torbush, who was in charge of defense at UNC at the time.

Going to college

Saturday went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on an athletic scholarship. From 1994 to 1997, he played for coach Mack Brown’s North Carolina Tar Heels football team and earned a letter each year.

He was one of the Tar Heels’ team captains as a junior in 1996 and again as a senior in 1997. He was named to the first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) at center in 1996 and 1997. In 1997, he was also named to the Academic All-ACC team. Nate Hobgood-Chittick, Saturday’s college roommate and a defensive tackle who went on to play four years in the NFL, later said, “Jeff gave us all kinds of kicks on the practice field. I could count on one hand the number of one-on-one drills where I beat him, and when it did, I was happy.”

Baltimore Ravens

Sports Illustrated said that Saturday was the 11th best center in the 1998 NFL Draft. He was called “a bit of an overachiever who has worked to get better,” but he was also called “a small guy who has trouble competing with big, strong NTs who can beat him.” He went undrafted. On April 27, 1998, the Baltimore Ravens signed him as a free agent, but they let him go on June 12, 1998. He went back to Raleigh, North Carolina, and got a job as a manager at an electrical supply store.
