His writing, which was produced by an Indian-born author, combined magical realism with historical fiction and was mostly concerned with the interactions, wars, and migrations between Eastern and Western civilizations, many of which occurred on the Indian subcontinent.

Salman Rushdie, a novelist, reportedly suffered an assault on Friday in New York, United States, just before he was scheduled to give a lecture. He received death threats from Iran in the 1980s as a result of his writing.
An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man attack the stage at the Chautauqua Institution as Rushdie was being presented and begin striking or stabbing Rushdie. The author was shackled after being taken off or knocked to the ground.
Rushdie’s “The Satanic Verses” has been illegal in Iran since 1988 because many Muslims find it offensive. The late Iranian president Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini demanded Rushdie’s execution in a fatwa, or ruling, that was released a year later. According to reports, there is a $3 million bounty on Rushdie’s head.
One among the first to react was Delhi-based British novelist William Dalrymple, who hoped that Mr. Rushdie wasn’t hurt. He tweeted: “A terrible day for literature, the freedom of expression, and writers everywhere. Poor Salman, I hope he avoids injury and recovers quickly.”

Threats were made against Mr. Rushdie, Padma Lakshmi’s ex-husband, in the late 1980s, particularly because of his book The Satanic Verses, which has been illegal in Iran since 1988 due to charges that it is derogatory to Islam. The Iranian government stated it had no intention of carrying out the “fatwa,” or edict, by 1998, despite the supreme leader of Iran having also set a bounty for his murder. It’s unclear if the attack has anything to do with that.
When novelist Salman Rushdie and “Top Chef” host Padma Lakshmi first met in 1999, she was astounded by his knowledge and eloquence. In an interview with People Magazine, Lakshmi compared Rushdie’s renown in India to that of Hemingway in the United States.
