Early years
Nolan Ryan was born on January 31, 1947, in Refugio, Texas, a small town in the southern part of the state that is just south of Victoria. Ryan was the youngest of Lynn Nolan Ryan Sr. and Martha Lee (Hancock) Ryan’s six children (1907–1970). The senior Ryan worked for the Houston Post as a newspaper delivery person. He had to get up early in the morning to prepare 1,500 newspapers for delivery over a 55-mile route. The kids were expected to help with day-to-day chores. Ryan’s family lived in nearby Woodsboro, Texas, in Refugio County, until Nolan was six weeks old, when they moved to Alvin, Texas, in Brazoria County. Nolan liked to throw things at any target when he was young. His father thought that baseball was a better way for him to use his arm, so he pushed Nolan to play.
Ryan joined Alvin Little League Baseball when he was nine years old. When he was 11 and 12, he made the all-star team, and a few years after that, he threw the first no-hitter of his life. Ryan played other positions on the team besides pitcher.
