2002
Meares just missed a bronze medal in the 500-meter time trial in 2002 at the inaugural Commonwealth Games in Manchester while her older sister Kerrie Meares took home the gold. In the sprint, she took home the bronze medal.

2004
She earned a gold medal and set a new world record in the women’s 500-meter time trial at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, clocking in at 33.952 seconds. In January 2008, seven months before the Olympics, Meares crashed at the third round of the World Cup circuit in Los Angeles. Meares crashed at 65 km/h, breaking her C2 vertebra, dislocating her right shoulder, tearing ligaments and tendons, severely bruising her right hip, and sustaining skin abrasions from her skin sliding on the wood. Amazingly, she underwent extensive therapy and was back on the bike 10 days after the accident. With the points she had accrued before the accident, Meares was able to battle back and earn a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Meares’ sprint semifinal at the 2008 Summer Olympics was exciting. She won the second heat after falling to Guo Shuang in the first round. Guo’s front wheel fell out from under her during the third heat when she came down the hill too quickly. Although Guo narrowly prevailed in the rerun of the heat, she was demoted for coming down the track and shoving Meares onto the côte d’azure on the last lap. As a result, Meares advanced to the gold-medal ride-off against Victoria Pendleton, where she lost and took home the silver.
