Norvell was a young, up-and-coming offensive coach who used a fast-paced, pass-oriented spread offence and brought the high-octane style to Memphis, just like Justin Fuente did.

As one of his first actions after taking over as head coach, Norvell decided to keep Darrell Dickey on the Fuente staff and promote him to associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator, and running backs coach. Norvell signed a five-year contract with the University of Memphis, which included an initial base pay of $1.8 million and a small annual raise.

In 2016, the Tigers had an 8-5 overall record.

Darrell Dickey was chosen as the team’s lone offensive coordinator to take Long’s place. On May 12, 2017, it was revealed that Norvell had been given a one-year contract extension by the University of Memphis until the 2021 campaign, along with pay rises for his assistant coaches.
