Jeff Fenech’s Career in Boxing
Fenech is of Maltese descent and was born in St. Peters, Sydney. Fenech was introduced to boxing when he visited the Newtown Police Boys Club in Sydney, where he met Johnny Lewis, after playing junior rugby league and encountering law enforcement as a child. Fenech then went on to have a successful amateur career, which led to him being chosen as the boxing team captain and him representing his nation at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. At the Olympics, Redep Redepovski of Yugoslavia defeated Fenech in a contentious quarterfinal match.
After the Olympic Boxing Committee’s intervention and a full recount, the judgment was changed and Redepovski was handed the victory rather than Fenech. Most boxing journalists remarked how political amateur boxing was, especially at the Olympic Games. Many other fighters and members of the press believed that Fenech had been denied the opportunity to win an Olympic medal.
That choice prompted Fenech to turn professional later in 1984, and in his debut match, he knocked out Bobby Williams in round two. Fenech rapidly earned a reputation as a quick starter after winning his first eleven fights by knockout. In his fourth fight, Fenech defeated Iliesa Manila in Fiji by knockout after just two rounds.
He began 1985 by knocking out underdogs Wayne Mulholland and Rolando Navarro in the fifth round of each fight. The International Boxing Federation ranked him as the top bantamweight in the world following those two victories. However, some members of the press questioned if he could go the full 15 rounds after his early KO victories.
It only took Bantamweight Champion Fenech six professional matches to rise to the top contender. He challenged Satoshi Shingaki for the IBF Bantamweight title in only his seventh fight, unseating Davey Moore as the second fastest boxer to fight for a world title after starting his career. He was then followed by Shingaki himself, Leon Spinks, Saensak Muangsurin, Pete Rademacher, Joves De La Puz, Joko Arter, and Rafael Lovera.
When Fenech defeated Shingaki in nine rounds in front of a roaring crowd at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney, he became the third fastest boxer to win the world championship, following Muangsuring and Spinks. He challenged Shingaki to a rematch in the State Sports Centre in Sydney after two non-title knockout victories. In three rounds, he knocked Shingaki out to retain his championship. Fenech had to go the distance for the first time after a non-title knockout victory, but he eventually won the fight by unanimous decision after 15 rounds against American Jerome Coffee at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.
1987 was a significant year for Fenech as the super bantamweight champion. He gained weight, and in his debut match as a super bantamweight, he won by decision against Tony Miller. After that, Samart Payakaroon, the WBC super bantamweight champion, traveled to Australia to defend his title against Fenech. By eliminating Payakarum in four rounds, Fenech won the two-weight world championship. He faced future world bantamweight champion Greg Richardson in his next defense and defeated him in five rounds. After that, Carlos Zarate, a former WBC bantamweight champion, took on Fenech. At the Perth Entertainment Centre, Fenech successfully defended his championship with a four-round technical decision victory. To cap off the year, he stopped Osmar Avila in one round of a non-title fight.

By 1988, Fenech had developed into a featherweight, and the WBC once more matched him in Sydney for their vacant featherweight title with Victor Luvi Callejas of Puerto Rico, a former world super bantamweight champion. By knocking out Callejas in the eleventh round, Fenech became a member of the elite club of boxers who have won the world title in three or more weight classes. Before the year was up, he successfully defended the championship twice, defeating Tyrone Downes and Georgie “Go Go” Navarro in the fifth round of each fight.

He lost to South African lightweight champion Phillip Holiday in 1996, in what was believed to be his final contest (he faced Nelson again 12 years later). Holiday knocked him out in the second round. He gave up after the fight.

In 1986, Fenech was honored with a spot in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
Fenech has been working during his retirement, and today he owns an Australian sportswear company that bears his name. He was also admitted in 2002 to the Canastota, New York-based International Boxing Hall of Fame. Nedal Hussein, Hussein Hussein, Sakio Bika, and former IBF flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan are among the competitors whom Fenech has trained as a trainer.
Fenech pled guilty to his part in the theft of three gold watches worth a combined $327 from a boutique store on the Gold Coast, Queensland, in 2005, despite several denials made in the media and on his website. Security cameras within the business provided unequivocal proof of his participation, showing that Fenech took a direct part in the incident.

Fenech announced his return to professional boxing in March 2008 at the age of 43. He shed 22 kg in order to prepare for the match.
