Career of Lara Logan

During her studies in Durban (1988–1989), Logan worked as a news reporter for the Sunday Tribune before moving on to the Daily News of the city (1990–1992). She started working for Reuters Television in Africa in 1992, mostly as a senior producer. After four years, she started working as a freelance journalist, landing jobs with ITN and Fox/SKY, CBS News, ABC News (in London), NBC, and the European Broadcasting Union as a reporter and editor/producer. She covered stories for CNN, including the conflict in Northern Ireland, the Kosovo war, and the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Nairobi and Tanzania.

In addition to working as a freelance correspondent for CBS News Radio, Logan was employed in 2000 by GMTV Breakfast Television (in the UK) as a correspondent. She requested a visa for travel to Afghanistan from a clerk at the Russian Embassy in London a few days after the September 11 attacks. She infiltrated the American-British-supported Northern Alliance in November 2001 while working for GMTV in Afghanistan and spoke with General Babajan, their commander, at the Bagram Air Base.

In 2002, she received a full-time correspondent post offer from CBS News. She reported from the front lines for the majority of the following four years, frequently while embedded with the US military in Afghanistan and Iraq. But she also conducted interviews with well-known people and explorers, like Robert Ballard, who found the RMS Titanic’s wreck. She contributed a lot of reports to 60 Minutes II. She also frequently contributed to Face the Nation, The Early Show, and the CBS Evening News. Logan received a promotion to “Chief international affairs correspondent” for CBS News in February 2006.

In August 2018, Logan left CBS News.

The following year, she temporarily joined the Sinclair Broadcast Group as a correspondent covering the border between the United States and Mexico.

Logan reported fighting on Baghdad’s Haifa Street in late January 2007, but the CBS Evening News chose not to air it because they thought it was “a bit strong.”

Logan appealed to the public for help in overturning the judgement, urging them to view the tale and share the link with as many of their friends and acquaintances as they could, stating, “It should be seen.”

Criticism For Lara Logan

In June 2010, Logan came under fire for her comments regarding Michael Hastings, another journalist, and her belief that journalists who embed with the military shouldn’t write about the casual banter they overhear. General Stanley A. McChrystal and his staff were quoted in a Rolling Stone piece that month, and remarks that Hastings overheard while travelling with McChrystal were critical of Joe Biden and other officials. As a result, President Barack Obama sacked McChrystal as his commander in Afghanistan. Logan informed CNN that Hastings’ reporting had broken an unwritten rule among journalists who accompany military personnel on their travels not to record insignificant conversations that take place between them.

Using what she said, “In other words, is what General McChrystal and his staff are doing truly so terrible that they merited ending a career like McChrystal’s? Michael Hastings hasn’t exactly given his country the kind of service McChrystal has.” What they did was definitely reprehensible, according to Jamie McIntyre, a former top military correspondent for CNN, and her remarks “sadly reinforced the worst caricature of reporters who ’embed’ with senior military officials but are actually ‘in bed’ with them.” He continued by quoting Admiral Mike Mullen as saying that military people have to be impartial and refrain from criticising civilian authorities.

In a Salon article on the incident, Glenn Greenwald stated that Logan’s segment was an illustration of what journalism has “degenerated into.” Despite doing brave reporting over the years, Logan had developed a sense of belonging to the government and military, according to Greenwald.
