Life at home

The city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is where Ricardo Emmanuel Brown was born. At 16, he moved to Hawthorne, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. At 18, he moved to South Los Angeles, the Crenshaw District.

From 1997 to 1999, he was going out with the rapper Foxy Brown. In the early 2000s, he was engaged to Natina Reed. After the birth of their son Tren Brown in 2002, they broke up. In 2007, Brown married Jovan Brown. In 2017, Jovan Brown asked for a divorce. He started dating Toni Calvert that same year. In 2020, they were on the 17th season of Marriage Boot Camp.

The label Death Row

At age 19, Kurupt signed with Death Row Records, which had just been started by music manager Suge Knight and rapper and music producer Dr. Dre, who had just left the rap group N.W.A. and Ruthless Records. At Death Row, Kurupt joined artists like Daz Dillinger, Lady of Rage, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, and RBX, who became known to the public through their appearances on Dr. Dre’s first solo album The Chronic. Soon, Kurupt and Daz became a rap duo called Tha Dogg Pound. Their song “For All My Niggaz & Bitchez” was on Snoop Dogg’s first solo album, Doggystyle.

By 1996, the rivalry between East Coast and West Coast rappers was getting worse. This was caused by Suge, the CEO of Death Row Records, and 2Pac, who had just joined the label and thought that a Bad Boy Records circle in their hometown of New York City was behind his shooting there in November 1994. Tha Dogg Pound’s song “New York, New York,” which Snoop Dogg was on, made fun of the city. Dogg Food, the duo’s first album, was produced by Daz and mixed by Dre. It got good reviews and sold well.

Getting a job after Death Row

When Tupac Shakur was killed in 1996, many artists left Death Row Records. Kurupt was the second person to leave. Only Dr. Dre left before him. He then signed with A&M Records, where he started the label Antra Records. In 1998, he put out his first solo album, Kuruption! Kurupt left the Antra label after releasing his second album, Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha, which included the diss track “Calling Out Names.” In this song, Kurupt insults New York rappers Ja Rule, 50 Cent, Irv Gotti, and DMX, accusing DMX of having an affair with Kurupt’s then-girlfriend Foxy Brown.

During this time, he joined forces with fellow Californian Ras Kass, Wu-Tang Clan member Killah Priest, and Canibus to form a new group called The HRSMN. However, despite promises of new music, the group has only released an unfinished white label.

Death Row owned the rights to the name Tha Dogg Pound, but Kurupt and Daz worked as the DPG (Dogg Pound Gangstaz) and sometimes with Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg, Soopafly, and others as the DPGC (Dogg Pound Gangstaz Crew) (Dogg Pound Gangsta Clique). As the DPG, Daz and Kurupt put out the album Dillinger & Young Gotti, which got mixed reviews. The next solo album by Kurupt, Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey, did better. It was produced by Daz and up-and-coming producer Fredwreck, and it was put out by Artemis Records. The late Natina Reed, who was Kurupt’s girlfriend at the time, sang the hook for its single “It’s Over.”

Go to Death Row again

Early in 2002, Tha Dogg Pound released an unofficial remix/compilation album called 2002, which made people wonder what their relationship was with Death Row. Kurupt signed with Death Row again and soon became its vice president. Kurupt and Daz started fighting because Daz was especially mad at Death Row’s mogul Knight. They often said bad things about each other on records and in interviews.

In 2003, Kurupt and DJ Tomekk released the single Ganxtaville Pt. III. It reached number five on the charts in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Kurupt worked on his next album, Against the Grain, while helping Spider Loc, Crooked I, and Eastwood, three of Death Row’s new artists, with their music. Also, he started a new group called The Riflemen with Kurupt, Mobb Deep, Jayo Felony, 40 Glocc, and The Alchemist, but it seems less likely that this group will make a record. After Kurupt’s solo album Originals kept getting pushed back, a bootleg version came out in 2004, just like Crooked I’s and other Death Row artists’.

Later, it turned out that Kurupt was more hurt by his fight with Daz than he let on. In April 2005, Kurupt and Daz got back together at a West Coast unity event hosted by Snoop Dogg. Snoop served as a mediator, and Kurupt and Daz went back to calling their rap duo Tha Dogg Pound. Kurupt’s long-delayed album Against tha Grain came out in August 2005, after he had already left Death Row for the second time. He later said that the disses on the album were not true, but in 2007 an EP called Against tha Grain E.P. came out with the disses.
