Kristin Chenoweth’s Initial in Life
Chenoweth was given the name Kristi Dawn Chenoweth by her adoptive parents, Junie Smith Chenoweth and Jerry Morris Chenoweth, when she was only five days old. Her adoptive parents were both chemical engineers and lived in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, which is a suburb of Tulsa.
She has stated that she is of one quarter Cherokee ancestry and that she eventually met her biological mother. She also stated that she was adopted at birth.
She began singing gospel music at a young age and performed for local churches. At the age of twelve, she gave a solo performance at the national conference of the Southern Baptist Convention, where she sang “Four Feet Eleven” by Evie. This was one of the most memorable moments of her childhood in the performing arts. The first line of the chorus is “I’m only 4 feet 11 but I’m going to Heaven” (Chenoweth is 150 cm tall, making her the same height as the song’s title). After completing her education at Broken Arrow Senior High School, where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta (Beta Omicron) sorority, Chenoweth went on to study at Oklahoma City University, where she also took part in the school’s productions of various plays.
She studied under voice instructor and mentor Florence Birdwell while earning a bachelor’s degree in musical theatre in 1990 and a master’s degree in opera performance in 1992.
