History of Kool Keith
Kool Keith got his start in music with the Ultramagnetic MCs. Thornton is said to have been institutionalized in Bellevue Hospital Center following the release of their significant 1988 album Critical Beatdown. He later clarified, however, that the claim that he was institutionalized was the result of a jesting remark made in the course of an interview, and he had no clue the tale would become so well-known.
Thornton would start a solo career after remaining with Ultramagnetic for two more albums (1992’s Funk Your Head Up and 1993’s The Four Horsemen).
Under the alias Dr. Octagon, Thornton issued his first famous solo record, “Earth People,” in 1995. The next year saw the publication of Dr. Octagonecologyst. After being initially released on the tiny Bulk Recordings label (as, simply, Dr. Octagon) a year earlier, the album was produced by Dan the Automator and Kutmasta Kurt with scratching by DJ Qbert. DreamWorks Records then released the record nationally in 1997. Instrumentalyst is the name of an instrumental album that DreamWorks also released (Octagon Beats).
