On September 25, 2021, Khary’s father, Fr. Victor E. Payton, tragically passed away at the age of 75. In the company of his family and friends, he died away at his Georgia home.

His deceased parents, Lois Smith Payton Russell and Reverend Hezekiah R. Payton, together with his mother, were present when Victor was born in Savanna, Georgia, in June 1948.

He was a salutatorian in 1967 and a student at Saint Pius 10 High School. Likewise, at the age of only 15, he was an Eagle Scout.

He attended Mercer University after finishing high school, where he majored in Chemistry. After graduating from Mercer University in 1971, he attended the Medical College of Georgia for medical school, where in 1975 he mostly studied paediatrics and emergency medicine.

Prior to joining the US Army, Victor completed his paediatric residency at Tripler Army Medical Center after graduating from medical school.

He received the Medal of Commendation for his three years of service in the General Medical branch of the army, where he was also a captain.

The American Board of Pediatrics has granted Dr. Victor board certification in paediatrics. He and his spouse opted to live in Athens, Georgia after working in emergency medicine for a number of years. He subsequently began practising there as an ER physician.

He was also a Medical Director at Rivers Crossing, a facility that offered specialised care to young people in need.

Dr. Payton opened his private office in 1982, making him the first African American paediatrician in Athens.

He employed his 40 years of experience at both public and private hospitals. He served as the head of BrightPaths of Athens, a charitable organisation that assisted low-income families, in Athens.

Dr. Payton joined the Reddy Medical Group in Georgia in the summer of 2019 and received praise for his efforts there.

Victor was a well-known physician in addition to being an enthusiastic tennis player and swimmer.
