Chimaev stated that he was motivated to begin training in mixed martial arts (MMA) during a night at work when he took a 15-minute break to watch the main event between Aldo and McGregor. Chimaev made this claim in an interview with ESPN. According to Chimaev, “I was watching the battle that he [McGregor] was in. I was observing him compete against Aldo. I was seated in night and was working. During those fifteen minutes, I was taking a break and watching him compete. I constantly think about it like, if those guys make so much money, like millions and all this other things, why can’t I do it now? I am a combatant and a warrior, and I harbor a unique quality deep within my being. I had to figure out how to extract this item so that I could present it to the people.”

Chimaev competed in three mixed martial arts (MMA) bouts as an amateur between September 2017 and April 2018. The first fight he had was against Khaled Laallam, who would go on to win the IMMAF World Championship, and he defeated him by submission in the second round. He finished his amateur career with a record of three wins, one by submission and one by technical knockout, for a total of three victories and a perfect record in the amateur ranks.

On May 26, 2018, at International Ring Fight Arena 14, Chimaev competed in his first fight as a professional, which was against Gard Olve Sagen.

 Since relocating to Kalmar at the age of 19, Chimaev has been competing in mixed martial arts competitions for Sweden.  He was just two years old when he went down a flight of concrete stairs, which resulted in his being unable to breathe properly through one of his nostrils and leaving him with a noticeable scar on his upper lip.

Prior to beginning his career as a professional athlete, he held a job as a security guard and also worked at a poultry plant in Kalmar.

Chimaev became infected with COVID-19 in December 2020 and struggled with persistent symptoms, which resulted in many hospitalizations and the postponement of a fight against Leon Edwards that was planned to take place.

Chimaev is considered to be one of Ramzan Kadyrov’s closest confidants.

As a gift, Kadyrov gave Chimaev a Mercedes-Benz, which Chimaev ended up wrecking a few months later.
