Early years
Hesmondhalgh was born in the Lancashire town of Accrington. She tried to get into a drama school when she was 18. Hesmondhalgh played Sylvia Lancaster, Sophie’s mother, a role she had played before on stage. Sylvia Lancaster and Hesmondhalgh are friends, and Hesmondhalgh is a patron of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. Hesmondhalgh won a Royal Television Society Award in 2015 for her role as Sylvia.
