Two DNA samples were found on the phone cable from the crime site by forensic specialists. Nelson’s left and right hands’ fingernails were both swabbed, and the outcomes were the same in both cases.
Following this tip, the authorities learned that the DNA sample belonged to Mathew, who had sustained a head injury and appeared to have a scar from a nail. As a result, the police detained him to conduct a more thorough investigation.

Matthew Kidder was convicted guilty of first-degree murder and assault with a dangerous weapon in relation to the death of Jessica Nelson. For the rape and strangulation of Jessica, the man was required to serve a life sentence in prison as of 2016.
Kidder was given a fifty-year prison sentence in 2018 for having a firearm in his possession. The judge reduced the sentence to twenty years after learning that fifty years was outside the permitted range.
