Jess has been a tornado of comedic creativity and linguistic teasing for more than ten years. She is equally at home discussing the realities of parenthood, flaunting her astonishing jester’s intelligence, or putting on mini-plays in the style of Alan Bennett about the ludicrous particulars of British life. Jessica was quite distinctive even as a little girl. She says in an interview with The Standard Issue magazine: “I did ballet, but I liked football and tennis better. It was in the early 2000s that Jessica, who has experience in improv, first dipped her toe into the world of live comedy. Speaking to Comedy.co.uk, she recalled performing at her first-ever show in a London club in 2008: “I remember feeling unbelievably high and terrified…. In about three minutes, I had a devilish jumble of jokes that covered everything from linguistics to pure depravity. It went extremely well, considering, and it felt terrific. They laughed a lot when I said what I thought. I was very inexperienced, and it was an entire experiment. I had never experienced live stand-up before and had no idea what to anticipate. I became immediately dependent on the terror, the drama, the freedom, the immediate pleasure, and the system’s apparent straightforward meritocracy.
A year later, as part of the free fringe, Jessica and fellow comic Dan Thompson performed as Pecker and Foof Save The World at the Edinburgh Festival. A pivotal accomplishment for Jessica was bringing her first solo performance, Luxury Tramp, to the fringe in 2011. But perhaps not in the way she thinks about it. She reflects, “I have always worked very, very hard but I spent years making very sluggish progress,” in an interview with Beyond the Joke. I don’t regret anything because I was happy the entire time; I just wasn’t planning ahead or moving quickly. I discovered a few years ago that many critics formed an opinion of me in 2011 and determined that no matter what I did, I would be average, reliable, safe, 3*, and out of style. I now realize that for a very long time, I must have believed them, and as a result, I hid on the free fringe and club circuit. Being told you’re average might be even more crippling than being told you’re terrible, in my opinion. Improving but afraid of being noticed actually. I couldn’t help it when people wrote terrible things about me; I let my heart get broken, and then I had to go through the difficult process of healing it again.
Fortunately for her admirers, her heart did heal. Her most recent solo performance, Imaginary Colin, is a perfectly timed play about the chaotic world she will be bringing her fictitious child of the same name into. She continues to tour the UK comedy scene and has brought another four solo shows to Edinburgh Festival. The Silence of The Nans, her most recent performance, followed. It was a cautionary tale of a stand-up booking gone horribly wrong. Both have drawn large crowds and received acclaim from both viewers and critics.
